recognition of Thanksgiving Day. The people who established Thanksgiving Day had little bounty and

Phipps and Colorado Roads
Senator L aw rence C. Phipps of
Colorado did his s ta te a good tu rn
the other day. He w rote to S tate

“I am advised th a t unem ploym ent
in Colorado h as been ag g ravated on
account of th e stopping of sta te
highw ay work because th e s ta te of
Colorado is unable to sell the high­
way bonds a t the price fixed by law
In com petition w ith o ther offerings of
securities. T h a t I m ay help In a p rac ­
tical way to relieve th e unem ploym ent
in Colorado, 1 shall be glad to p u r­
chase $56.000 of th e s ta te of Colorado
8 per cent bonds on as favorable term s
and price as may be a rran g ed fo r the
sale of these securities. Not only will
th e u n fo rtu n a te condition of men be­
ing out of work be rem edied by the
purchase of these bonds by our citi­
zens, but all of th e citizens of the
s ta te will benefit by the developm ent
resulting from the construction of
p roper highw ays.”
T here a re $2,000.000 of these highw ay bonds. S enator Phipps’ offer in­
spired plans fo r a statew id e cam paign to sell th e bonds and prevent 5,000 men
from losing th eir jobs on m ore th an GO highw ay projects, em bracing about
250 m iles of roads. Then a tru s t compuny o f D enver stepped in and bought the
whole issue a t p a r w ith accrued Interest. W ord of th e sale reached Maj. L.
D. B lauvelt, head of the highw ay commission, as he w as inform ing a m eet­
ing of c o n tracto rs th a t construction would have to stop tw o days later.
