fiscal y ear spent m ore th an $1,200,000,
81,000,000 of which was contributed dl-
recty by N ational H eadquarter* and
the rem ainder by various greups *a-
terested in the w elfare of China.

Roll Call, Novem ber 11 to 24.
T h e m ethod of relief employed by
the A m erican Red Cross In ita opera­
tions in China was p a rticu larly effec­
tive, fo r In addition to saving hundred«
of thousands of lives it provided China
w ith m ore than 900 m iles of perm anent
roads th a t a re sorely needed to pre­
vent a recurrence of fam ine. At one
tim e th e Red Croas employed 74,000
Chinese workm en, paying them in food
for them selves and dependents, thia
food being brought in from M anchuria
and elm where.
