A com bat betw een sh ark s is a ra re
sight, but a b a ttle to the finish was
w itnessed in the sea off the South
C arolina coast by some fishermen. A
com m otion in the w ater first a ttra c t-
ed atten tio n to th e spot. The two
m onster fish w ere a tta ck in g each oth-
e r w ith the utm ost fu ry ; and as the
struggle took place a t the su rface of
th e w ater, the anglers had an excel
lent view of it. T he sh ark s fought,
not w ith th eir teeth, but with their
long, pow erful tails. They dashed fu
riously a t each other, d a rtin g th is wav
and th at, each lashing a t the other
with his rail. At no tim e did the spec
ta to rs see blood in the w ater, hut the
blows th a t w ere stru ck w ere evidently
hard enough to d<. fata l dam age, for
a fte r a while one of the com batants
began to show signs of distress. It
gradually w eakened and presently
turned sidew ays on th e su rface and
then over on its back, in which po
sition It flouted, ap p aren tly dead.
T he men In the boat w ere about to
a tta c h a rope to the carcass when
suddenly th ere wa« a m ighty sw irl
in the w ater, and the o th er sh a rk
cam e sw iftly to the surface, seized
the defeated foe in his jaw s and
carried him down out of sight.

Q uaint G a rte r Customs.
T here a re several q u a in t custom s
in connection w ith g a rte rs. A descrip
tion of two, how ever, m ust suffice. T h e
one is th a t p rev a len t In several mid-
E uropean countries, of tak in g off th e
bride’s g a rte r by th e best man a t th e
b reak fast, a n d c u ttin g It up, and dis
trib u tin g th e pieces am ong the groom s
men and guests.
T he second is, or ra th e r w as, th e
p ractice in th e G erm an im perial
fam ily of giving the bride thirteen
pairs, one p a ir of which w as k ep t as
likely to bring h er good luck. T his
p a ir is alw ays m ade of pale blue silk
(th e m aiden’s color), and h a s diam ond

p a irs w ere given as keepsakes to the
young nobles and o thers who a tte n d ed

Judging from th e m odern specim ens,
g a rte rs are even now adays scarcely
less dainty, elaborate, o r costly th an

for use.— K ansas City Star.
