W hen A rth u r B. Thom pson,
A rctic traveler and w riter, was
engaged by U niversal to act as
technical director with N orm an
D aw n in the production of his la t
est photodram a, “T he Evil H all,”
a story of the frozen north, sta r
rin g Eva Novak, the producers
stipulated they were to have the
privilege of using the explorer’s
fam ous collection of furs, sledges,
w eapons and o th er trophies of the
A laskan country.
’ It happened that among the val
uable souvenirs brought back by
Thompson rtom one of his recent
visits to Alaska was
complete
wardrobe formerly belonging to a
princess of the Si Komas tribe.
The furs are of-exquisite quality
and though the style does not con-
fo-m to the latest dictates ol Paris
©r Fifth Avenue they arc pro
nounced to be the very last word
in fashion» along the Yukon.
Eva N ovak, who plays the Tok
of an A laskan girl in "T h e Evil
H alf,” is w earing these garm ents
in the picture.
T hey w ould be
rather uncom fortable for w ear in
Southern C alifornia, even in m id
w inter; so D irector Dawn m erci
fully took the en tire com pany on
location to the Y osem ite, w here
the snow is som e three feet deep,
and also to n orthern Canada,
w here several vital scenes are to
be filmed.
Miss N ovak’s blonde beauty is
enhanced by the picturesque co s
tum e of the no rth an d she at
tracted m ore attention during the
com pany’s stay in the Y dsem ite
than any of the m uch exploited
scenic w onders of the national
park.
N orm an D aw n is not only di
recting “T he Evil H alf” for Urn-
versal, b ut he w rote the story from
a personal experience while visit
ing Alaska some years ago to ob
tain scenic m aterial for the sere*"».

I t is surely m ore th an a coincidence
th a t w hiskered statesm en hold high
positions in m any lands, w rites a cor

as secretary of s ta te in th e U. S. A.
conies th e new s of th e appointm ent of
S ir Joseph Cook as high comm ission

seph’s heard is th e pride of th e a n

electorate rejected G eneral H ertzog
who has nothing but a m ustache, for
the bearded Smutz. And Lenin im
perturbably holds ills own, with a
beard, while th e sm ooth-shaven K eren

Venizelos, they say, w as never so pop
