E ncouragem ent will be offered by th e
M exican governm ent for the develop­
m ent of the diam ond field in the s ta te
of G uerro by p riv ate capital, it is a u ­
th o ritatively announced. T he existence
of diam onds in a m ountainous d istric t
of th a t so uthern s ta te has long been
known, but the rem oteness of the local­
ity and the difficulty of getting in and
out of the d istric t have heretofore p re­
vented anything being done tow ard
m ining th e gems.
It w as m ore th an fifty y ears ago th a t
th e discovery of diam onds th ere was
m ade by an officer of th e M exican
arm y. A collection of th e diam onds
w as taken to the City of Mexico aud
a fte r being cut they found th e ir way
into the channels of comm erce. E fforts
to relo cate the diam ond field proved fu ­
tile and it was not until m any y ears
la te r th a t a m ining prospector cam e
upon the form ation iu w hich the d ia­
m onds w ere found. H e collected a
large num ber of them in the rough and
took them back to th e capital, \Vhere
they w ere placed on exhibition. N oth­
ing was done, however, tow ard the de­
velopm ent of the field.
Not long ago the d e p a rtm e n t of com ­
m erce and industry of th e M exican gov­
ernm ent sent an expedition iu charge
of A ntonio Lopez, an engineer, to the
locality. Mr. Lopez rep o rted th a t his
research had tyeen en tirely successful.

d e p a rtm e n t of com m erce and industry.
