The old inferno of sound has giv­
en place to a m ore terrib le silence—
a silence unbroken by living crea­
tu re . No birds, no m oving things
in th e grass, n o thing but th e abso­
lute silence of a m an-m ade desert.
From the a g ric u ltu ra l point of
view, the country is years in the fu­
tu re. Every square foot m ust be lev­
eled and restored. Only here, the
u n d e rta k in g is infinitely m ore diffi­
cult. Any m om ent th e w orkm an
m ay run into an unexploded shell or
hidden death trap .
Every farm will have to be equip­
ped with a com plete new drainage
system . The old pipes w ere ripped
out d u rin g the early p a rt of the
bom bardm ent, allow ing the w aste
wat e r to spread out over the flat
countryside and collect in depres­
sions.
