Corn hns sup planted wheat as the principal food upply of the United states, according to a comprehensive review just com pleted by the department of agricul ture. Corn is produced by nearly 5,000,00(1 of the approximately 6.500,000 farms in the United States. Nearly 100,000, 000 acres of farm land Is devoted to the production of this single crop, which, in recent years, has reached more than 3,000,000,000 bushels. The value of the crop during the war reached more than $3.00(1,000,000 or one-eighth of the present national debt. The 1920 crop, the largest ever pro duced, had a value of $2,150,000,000; the 1921 crop, 11,303,000,000. S, JOLT TO ALLIES Statement of Opposition to All Secret Treaties By Amer ica Causes Stir. Lausanne. America gave Great Britain, France and Italy a hard jolt when her spokesman, Richard Wash burn Child, declared that the United States government has the support of the American people in its opposition to all secret treaties and agreements, particularly those designed to create zones of economic and commercial in fluence such as the San Remo tri partite agreement of 1920, which ap portioned the Mesopotamtan oil fields among the three big powers. Mr. Child's exposition was merely a restatement of Secretary of State Hughes' aide-memoire of October 30, in which he defined for the benefit of the British, (Trench and Italian gov ernments the functions of the Amer ican observers to the Lausanne con fer, 'nee and broadly outlined Ameri ca's open door policy for the near cast i but it was a restatement Under con- ditions that made it sensational. It came as the conference was about to begin consideration of Turkey's Asiatic boundaries and it was a clear warning that America will not remain silent if the three inviting powers in sist upon preferential rights in Oil, mineral, railway and power develop ment In present Turkish territory or in that which was lopped off by the war. it was not possible for the delegates of the inviting powers to conceal their impatience at America's insistent re iteration of tier policy which they re sent especially because of her refusal to accept a vote in the conference, to sign any report or to accept any re sponsibility further than to act as an adviser. The American new attitude, how ever, is according great satisfaction to the neutral countries represented here. Times were hard for an old couple I in Europe so they wrote to their I son in America, "If you don'l help I us we will have to go to the poor bouse." Two weeks later caoie collect, ma three.
