It has been found that pullets that lay well in the fall are usually good annual layers, while the late starters are likely to prove quitters. The copper carbonate dust treat ment of seed wheat for smut con trol cannot be expected to give the best results when the open box floor, or canvas method of mixing is employed. The powder is mixed with the grain at the rate of two ounces to each bushel, but 100 per cent control calls for the use of special mixing device. Farmers art not counseled against this treat ment provided they can mix it prop erly. O.A.C. Experiment station. Dr. W. T. Tiller, Dentist Arlington, Oregon - of diseases. Potato special ists from the United states depart' ment of agriculture have recently questioned whether any potatoes at all will be grown in Oregon .50 years from now. Potato mosaic is one of the dir eases most feared. Once in the stock no means are known of erad icating it or ever getting tubers fit for seed from it. This makes it high lime for growers and potato scientists to begin a field search for diseaie-free potato of the right sort for sourcesof seed. The search must begin in the field, as the presence of mosaic and will can be detected in the growing vines only. Even there it is not al ways easily recognized, and where possible the grower unless well in formed on this disease himself needs the hell) of a specialist. The grower is advised by M. B. McKay, potato disease specialist at the O.A.C. Experiment slat ion, to go nto the field now while the vines are still green and ,.;rov. ;n,r, and stake those most vigorous and 'tee from evidences of dis'ne. After the Vines die down it Will not be possible to detect mosaic an:l wilt, final selection of the seed will then be made from the staked hills. Even certification is no insurance against presence of mosaic, as slight infection may be brought into plants by aphis! carrying the virus, giving .ut little indication In th' parent stock but coming out strong in the new crop. Many such cases are re ported Horn northern grown, inspect ed and certified seed, as the virus of mosaic has not been isolatd and iden 1 ined.
