It Is said that by i wh a metinit. the vast Important f a port.ic road could be brought flvldly before the minds of the people, nd an appropriation of or nioee could b made by congress lmmeJIsJe'y up on Its being called totether lnt Decern- ber. It haa been argued that such a convention could be held after harvest, sometime In November, and Its effect aould be far-reaching In securing securm, to the sea passageway from Lewlston The Idea act forth by Lewlston bust won Dual- nessmen Is that a portage railway could be cheaply and rapidly construct ed nround th river obstructions at The Dalles, and If positive action was taken, an appropriation could be se cured from congress for Immediate use. Farmers are prone to believe that eo long as they pay 14 cents for carrying a bushel of wheat from Lewlston to Portland, a distance ot J50 mile, they will never prosper. Especially are they displeased when they know that a bushel of wheat Is carried 100 miles from Chicago to the Eastern seaboard for 4 cents. They attach no blam to th railroada, for it is admitted that railroads may be perfectly justified In their charge. They believe, however. that a country of ao much Importance as this should have cheaper transpor tation to th se and that If con tress should be properly Influenced, the port ate railway could be but it. They argue that only by combine! ef fort can thla be accomplished. Power ful Eastern Interests, now centered lr Lewlston, are consldernlg the manner of reducing freight rates from this country to th seaboard. Th boat railway la suggested as th most feas ible means of convincing congress, that Her Is a movement which Astoria should heartily favor. The time was never so ripe tor pushing Astoria's advantage to th front. A commit tee of business men should be selected to encourage the proposed convention at The Palles. With a line ot grain steamers or barges plying between up per river points and Astoria, the rail road combination would be compelled to make this port a common point. Of course there will be strong opposition to this open river movement; because, t,on common point, the competl- tlon with witer transportation wll eventually result In a lower railroad rate to Astoria than any port on the North Pacific coast. By all means As toria should foster and assist this movement An organisation should br effected and the work commenced with out delay. ilohs Cough and Consumption This Is brrond qawtlon the mot (ucceofnl Cotqrh sledi cio ever known to scieoce: a tew do Invariably cure th wont cue ot CutiKh, Croup and Btoackiti. while its won. derful sacxena in the core of Comitmptina is wtthoat a par alll ib ia hifttnrr of medicine, Sine its ni.t ducorrryitbaa bca oold on a jraarante. a test whKh no otoce medKtn ess tund.
