It will ! le a treat wtlsfactlon to the rKPe ot Artoria to know that a paper ot the in. fluenre and character of th independent bat taken up this important public que tton. That Oregon, in many respects the g-reatest aca board stat of the Pacific slope; a state right rn the pathway of the rapidly growing commerce between the United State and the Orlrrrt, with lis matchless possession of tbe Columbia j river and a complete system of down grade railways through the water level pass of th Cascade range to that river's movr.h, e&ould be surpassed by tbe di tant and Inaccessible pons on Puget : sound in the volume of Its rxports and j Imports Is a source of both wonder and j feumlliaiion. Such a condition is a re-1 flection on our intelligence and enter-1 prise as a state, -and it is a loss to J the people of the whole country amount j hie in the aggregate to many millions ! I annually. This Is no fanciful sutenent j nor one born of hostility or envy of Por J land or the nourishing cities of the Puget sound region. If the Independent will take tbe pains to pursue this subject fur rher, the ex:ent of Oregon's backward nfs compared to sections incomparably less favored will be a revelation of start, ling significance. The Independent has hit upon the exact cause for this unnatural and ruinous condition. It fc the attempt to continue Por.land as the seaport out let for tbe great Columbian ba.in. It was not merely through the completion of all rail connection between the vast pro ductive area of the Inland Empire and the mouth of the Columbia river that Portland ceased longer to serve as the adequate seaport of the Columbian basin, but the changed economic conditions brought about by the introduction ol the immense modern carriers of ocean commerce has re-ndtred the transfer of the saport from a point 100 miles Irv land to the ample mou'h of the Colum bia river absolutely necessary. These great vessels cannot by any possible ar tmee of man be enabled ro reach a port situated rn the Interior. Their p'.are Is cn the ocean, and they must frequent porti which afford the depth of water and fa cilrty of access required by their tre. mendous bottoms. The low price paid for Northwest wheat, and the necessity for transferring by expensive rail and coast transportation nearly, if not quite, one-third of the total product of Oregon and WasWngton to San Francisco for export Is the direct consequence of at tempting to hold the seaport of this sec tion at Portland, or on the other side of the almost insurmountable mountain ranges between the Inland farmers and Puget sound. By long odds the natural point for exporting the products of the Interior and importing the products of the Orient Is at the natural seaport situ, ated at the end of the only system of water level railway transportation on the entire Pacific coast the mouth of, the great Columbia river. The Astorlan has Shown, snd can dhow again if It Is desired by the Independent, that, the producers of Oregon, Washington and Idaho would have saved on this year's crop of wheat alone the stupendous rum of H ,000, 000, if it had been exported from MOST VIOLENT CASES HAVE innrinrn IT nPPT 10 arytrntment. And not only would this ad vantage be gained by adapting the com merce of the Pacific to natural condi tions, but the state of Oregon snd the j whole country '.ould be richer by the millions upon millions of Oriental im ports which could be handlevl more ! cheaply and expeditiously from the ! mouth of the Columbia r:ver than from any other seaport on the whole Pacifl ocean. The Master Key, A doctors l who pie scribes a doien dif ferent rem edies for the srmp tomsoi one disesse is like an old time torn key lugging about a ponderous bnncb of keys, each one to open a different door. When lnfnflf'i blood is thin and watery ana poi soned with bilious impurities this condition will show itself in ev ery part of the body and the av erage doctor gives one medicine for the stomach, another for the head, a third for the lungs and so on: as if each particu lar symptom was a wparate dungeon of misery to be unlocked with its own particu lar key; but the scientific, experienced physician looks deeper and seeks the one master-key which unlocks them all.
