To show the importance of organlied effort on the part of Astoria people to circulate the facts and encourage a study amonc Inland fanners of the seaport sit uatton, attention Is called to the repro duction in the East Oreg-onian. wlih every appearance of approval and satis, faction by that paper, of a recent lame at. tempt made of tne ureg-oman m iu from the Portland standpoint why the price of wheat has remained atlonary In the Portland mar lie: in the face of a sharp advance recordd at every other export point in tha Vnited States. Evi dently the East Oreganlan Is content to accept tie excuses of the Oregonian and would have lis fanner readers thus pad fled for the lose to them of upward of tl.OM.M0 on the crop yet in hand In con sequence of helr noi-panicipation in the Improved market. It Is a real thame that country papers can be Imposed" upon In this way. to the prejudice and preat In jury of their readers. Analysis of the Oregonian's argument shows an admis sion that ocean freights are higher be tween Portland and the United Kingdom than from any other port on the Pacific coast and that thre is a strong tendency In nefl rates to go yet higher. The East Oregonlan will no: deny that this Is a fair deduction from the Oregonlan's ar. tide, and It would seem the duty of that paper to ascertain for the tenent of its readers the reason for this excess freight rate Instead of merely republishing the Oreeonlan'e bald and misleading state ments. The Astorlan has repeawdly af firmed without notice from the East Oregonlan that Inland producers would be benefited millions of dollars annually If fhey would force the railroad compan ies to deliver their what at a port closer to the ocean and having the advantage of deeper water than can be obtained at Portland. Why doesn't the East Oretro. nlan look Into a question of such Import to the people of Its community? Neither that paper nor the Oregonian has ever published a word regarding the Inability of Portland to compete with other Pa pine seaports owing to her Isolated situ ation and the demands of modern com mere for larger vessels than can ascend to the Willamette river. This is the key to the depreciated prices now paid for In land Empire grain, and Vt Is a situation which would be at once remedied by sub stltutirg Astoria as the place of export Instead of Portland. The only problem is to force the railroads to deliver the wheat at Asiorla. and this could be accom plished by one month's earnest agitation and discussion In the Inland Empire. In proof of the utter folly of funher at tempts to hold ihe wheat exports at Portland, the Astorlan invites the atten. tlor of the East Oregonlan and other inferior papers to the following summary recently published in the Marine Review of the arguments used by the people of New York ard Philadelphia to secure appropriations from the last congress for fc epeniPS the . harbors at those cities.
