Ing he went to the store kept by McGhee and accused him of circulating reports derogratory to the character of Mrs. Vart Winkle, w ho Is a sister of MeGhee's wife. Van Winkle, k ta alleged, assaulted McGhee with his hands, when the latter picked up a hammer and struck his as. sallant over the head. Van Winkle ran Into the street but McGhee followed and renewed the attack, knocking Van. Winkle don n and repeatedly striking him over the head with the hammer. Van Winkle Is In a critical condition.
