How In this for a paid advertisement In the hiphly moral column of the Or gonian a paper whica pronounce the San Frarw:co Examiner a disgrace to PacWc coast journalism and unfit to en ter the bom' of decent people. Thl. U a nlc thinjr fT the innocent girls and would-be manly boyt of PortUnd's re filled families to read in the '"Only Dally?" What a rich treat to spread be fore the bon ton o! that city at Its first class" opera house. What can the re spectable church-going people of Por:land think of a "family" newspaper that will admit such stuff to Its column? Will any of Portland's pioua and highly cul tured "pastors" daro allude in their ser mons this morning fo tbe purveyors of vice who aro booked for the "Grand" Marquam "next Monday and Tuesday" and their capper, the Oregonlan. which thus undertakes for hire to secure for them a gocd audience from among the young mn and "unmarried women" who will have, to procure a "gentleman" e. cort to see them safely through the evening's performance? What will Mrs. Karclssa White Kinney and Mrs. Abigail Dunlway have to say to this example of Tortland family journalism In their next lecture on eoolal purity contributed to the columns of the "best paper published west of the Rocky Mountains?" Of "Th Turtle." which is booked for th Marquam next Monday and Tuesday, the Butte Miner, of May a. ays over the follow!? headlines: "For the Male Sex Only The Turtle," a Good Thing to Bring Color to a Woman's Cheek a Perfection of 8uirgettvene." Blushes were frequent In the first act, at allusions and positions. At th- beginning of the second act the face of every modest woman turned a brilliant crimson and continued so through the action of th play. It might be going too far to say that no self, respecting woman knowing what the play Is would attend, though that seemed to be the universal verdict. But most cer tainly no young girl should be allowed to go, -end no unmarried woman without a gentleman escort." The Kind You Have Always Bought In Use For Over 30 Years. e tr tfl.NNT. rt racrr. mm romu rr?. 2 cents a bushel to hul the frmer" wheat over a descending grade 111 miles to Aslorla from Pendleton? A bushel of wheat weighs 60 pounds. It takes 33 bushels of wheat to make ton. At Ornis a bushel the railroads would r ce'.ve more than 17.33 a ton for every ton of wheat transported the 1 miles on a down grade to Astoria. 1 nfese same roads take a ton of salmon from Astoria to New York, over S.i) min and across three, mountain ranges for R4. Why can't they bring a ton of heat from Pendleton to Astoria for IT-S3 and make money? Does any farmer believe thy cannot? Is It unreasonable to assume j that they can? Why shouldn't the farm er at Pendleton, then, expect i) cents a bushel for his wheat? Perhaps the Ore. gonlaa can explain why the farmer should not expect SO cents a bushel .'or his wheat. The Oregonlan doesn't raise any wheat, but It helps to run a railroad and ought to known something about the expense of transporting a ton of freight 331 milts over a descending gra'le and the cost of the same weight of freight S.0C miles over mountain grades. Will the Oregonlan explain why Its rail road can haul salmon to New York for 114 a ton and cannot haul wheat 331 miles on a down grade to Astoria for 17.33 a ton, so as to net the farmer who raises It at Pendleton 7) cents a bushel? This Is the Astoria proposition, which the Oregonlan tells the farmers who r.!s wheat and expect 50 cnts a bushel for it Is only another name for a scheme to sell real estate. Will the Oreg-mlan explain to these expectant farmers why they are no: Interested in any real estate scheme which will net them at least M -nts a bushel for their wheat? HOW'S THI9 kisses of the honeymoon turn E. W. M'-Cormas, a Pendle'on grain buyer, stopping for a few days at the Imperial, says there Is a large amount of last year's wheat crop yet In the hands of Umatilla county farmers, who are holding for 50 cents a bushel 'n the warehouses Although fretting la, with another crop coming on rapid ly, producers are not discouraged yet, and stlil hope to obtain their price be fore next August. Yesterday's Orego. nlsn. Why shouldn't the farmer have 50 cents a bushel for his wheat? It Is w"rth 72 cents a bushel at Ban Francisco and would Ibrlng as much at Astoria if de livered Tiere. Astoria Is but a short rail. rosd haul from the wheat field fro-n Pendleton. In fact, where Mr. McComas says the farmers expect M cents a bushel for their wheat, the distance to Astoria Is but 331 miles, on a down grade prac tically every foot of tne way. One cause, more than anv other, ron-tribute-i to making the tin of thou'andt: of childless, and consequent! unhappy homes all over this country The cause is often the unconscious fault of the wife. A woman who suffers from weakness and dis. ease of the distinctly feminine organism is unfitted for motherhood, and if she has children it will probablv be at the sacrifice of her own life. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Pre senption is a wonderful medicine for wom en who suffer in this way. It acts directly on the delicate and important organs con cerned in wifehood and motherhood. It makes them strong, healthy, vigorous, vi rile and elastic. It banishes the squeam lshness of the exnectani nerind mH baby's advent easy and almost painless. It insures the little new-comer s health and a bountiful supply of nourishment. Thou sands of homes that were childless and unhappy now echo with the prattle of healthy babyhood, as the result of the use of this marvelous medicine. ' When 1 beyan takinz Dr. Pierce s medicines I was very sick," writes Mrs. R. D. Moore ot 6chuv!er, Colfax Co., Net.r., (Boi 175).
