F. P. Kendall would make an aJmlr.
able (chool director. He to a man whose
training and education p,lii:y b'fl:
him for auch a position. Aside from this,
be haa children of aobool age, In who
education ho is, of course, interested.
Everything elM being equal, the fact
that his children are dependent upon the
public school fnclHtica of Astoria for
their start In life should be a deciding
consideration in his favor. The office of
school director isne of the most Import,
ant under our system of free government
Upon our public schools rests tb whole
fabrto of the American nation. Too
much care cannot be exercised in the
elections made for these positions. Per
sonal friendship or mere sentimental
considerations are entitled to no weight
in such a matter. The sole question at
issue Is one involving the beat qualifies.
(Ions. Without disparaging the merits
or claim of any other candidate. Mr.
Kendall's Is the most satisfactory name
yet mentioned for th office of school
director. It is unnecessary to seek fur.
ther, and be should have the hearty sup.
port of every patron and other citln-n
interested In the maintenance of our
present high standard of common school
education.
Lord Charles Beresford, Great Brit,
ain's commissioner to China, says the
total trade of China today Is practically
33.000,000, and of this (amount Great
Britain controls about 53 per cent, and
the United States 14 per cent. The re.
tnalnder is divided almost -wholly be.
twean Germany and Japan. The com.
mercial Interests of Russia and France
amount to practically nothing. Ameri.
can trade during the past four years
has shown the greatest development.
For Instance, the exportation of cotton
goods from the United States into China
during the past fur years has increased
151 per cent 1n quantity and 59 per cent
In value, while la the same line of goods
Great Britain's exports have decreased
13 per cent In quantity and about 6 per
ceni in value. He favors t?ie "opn
door" equal opportunities of trade for
alt nations In China and the raising of
an efficient Chinese army, to b officered
by English, American, German and Jap.
anese officers. He does not think that
Russia and France should be Included
in this, as they have comparatively no
trade with Che Orient.
SOME NEW SITUATIONS.
The editorial of the Seattle Post-Intel.
Ugencer entitled the "Mouth of the Co.
lumbia," recently copied by the Astorian,
is the first recognition of Astoria's sea.
port supremacy by any outside dally of
tfoa Paciflo Northwest It Is a distinct
admission that the U. P.'s absorption of
the Short Line and of the O. R. & N.
means Astoria us the exporting point of
the through railway.
It is natural that the 8eattle press
should be the first to concede this great
fact. Decause, as a seaport, that city has
le to fear than any other from the
great commercial revolution that is sure
to follow quickly upon this radical
change in the railway situation. Seattle
lies nearest to the Alaskan gold fields.
It controls thereby the mighty Inland
waterway to that great region. It is
nearest of all the ports to the northern

Its position will thus concentrate alt
the traffic of Puget sound upon 1 .
self. There can be but one groat city
on that Inland sea. Seattle must be
that city. Tacoma will dwindle until it
becomes a suburb of that chief city. At
the snme tim "Jim" Hill's road will get
an outlet to Astoria via Portland and
the Solo pass from Montana.
While Hill's Seattle press la conceding
that the U. P.'s conquest of the O. R.
A N. means Astoria as lis terminal for
exports, it is reported on good authority
that Mr. Hill is now working In perfect
harmony with the Union Pacific. He
recognises his defeat He concede that
the present status is aa unnatural one,
and that the U. P. must export at As.
toria He yields t the patio laws of na
ture and conforms his railway system
to the situation.
It 4s bow in order for Portland also to
yield gracefully. Let the Oregonian rec
ognise the logic of the situation. While
Portland can no longer hold the export
ing business because it Is against na
ture, yet that loss will be her greatest
gain. Astoria as the chief seaport will
make Portland the FIRST instead of the
FOURTH city on the Pacific coast.
The imbecility of
some men is alwav

delight of uct,
men to boast of
what "tough fil

It may not
sound nice to
say so, but it is
a fact that the
average man i
juit that kind
of a boastful, cheerful idiot. If his head
aches, it isn't worth paying any attention
to: ifjie feels dull and drowsy during the
day. it isn't worth serious consideration;
if he is troubled with sleeplessness at
niKi, dc uo'.es mmseii wux opiaics.
When he suffers from nervousness, he
waiks into the nearest drug store and or
ders powerful medicines that even a phys
ician prescripts with care. He is a very
knowing fellow, but without knowing it.
he is huiteinz death. There is a wonder
ful restorative tonic and health-builder
that will keep the hardest working man
in good working shape; it is Dr. Pierce's
Golden Medical Discovery. It is made of
pure native roots and barks. It contains
no minerals, no narcotics and no opiates.
It simply aids niture in the natural pro
cesses of secretion and excretion. It tones
up the stomach and facilitates the flow of
digestive juices. It makes a man " hungry
as a horse " and then sees to it that the
life-giving elements of the food he takes
are assimilated into the blood. It invigor
ates the liver. It drives out all impurities
and disease germs from the system. It is
the great blood-maker and flesh-builder.
It is the best of all nerve tonics. It cures
bronchial, throat and lung affections as
well.
"I had indigestion and torpid liver," writes
Mrs. A I. liibbs of Kussrllville. Logan Countv.
Ky., " Dr. I'ierce s Golden Medical Discovery
cured me." ,
If constipation is also present, Dr.
Pierce's Pleasant Pellets should be taken.
They never fail ; they never gripe. Drug
gists sell both medicines.
General Otis cables from Manila a
report that tne Filipino representatives
at Washington tel-graohed Astulnaldo to
drive out the Americans before rein
forcements could arrive. The extent to
which Washington was the headuuarters
of the Filipinos is a remarkable part of
tne nistory of the recent battles.
