H. slot mauum: bill also void It may be of interest to the good peo. plo of Astoria to know that the bill re Cnlly passed by the legixliiture, and later signed by Governor Geer. abolishing nickel. tn.lhe-slol machines is also null and void, although this has not as yet been legally determined. Whc-n rhe bill came to the house from the aena-te It waa referred to a oommittee, the chair, man of which a member of the Clatsop Cunty delegation put rhe hill In his poviet. He was called away to Portland to confer with Washington atate legls. Mors regarding the fish law. and during his absence the bouse passed the measure. The bill passed by the house, however, waa not the bill that It was the Intention to pass. The measure which ihe gentle, man frum Clatsop had In his pocket con. tallied some amendments to the original bill, and ' the house took up and voted upn a copy of the bill which did not con. tain ihe amendments. Thus, the measure is not worth the paper It Is written on. so tut na U constitutionality is con. i cerned. and when the courts come to I pass upon the legality of the bill the I above facts will be brought out. The friends of the bill wlU doubtles. . bo very much aggrieved when they leiirn of the unfortunate circumstance which called away the chairman of the commit, tee at such a critical time In the bill's Welfare. The above information was given to an Atorian representative by a gentleman who was at Salem during nearly the en. tire soaaion t rhe legislature, and It is no doubt absolutely correct In every par. tlcular. Whether or not the salmon bill was tampered with is. of course, an open question. It la pretty safe to say, now. ever that the rnree members of the dele. guAlon will b frautlo when they learn that the enacting clause waa omitted, for they wvrked for its passage nlht and day and did everyhiing In ttielr power to obtain a majority for It.
