The British ship Matterhom loft Port land Tuesday last snd Is st some point cm the Willamette unable to proceed further owing to the Ice in the river. As tfie river Is low at present the Matter horn It liable to experience difficulty In crossing the sand bars and will havs to work her way down by tides, as she is fully laden. As abe has not yet passed the mouth of the Willamette, part of the cargo may have to be lightered at this point In order to pass through, for even with sufficient titer there the channel Is so narrow that it requires the utmost caution to keep a ship off the banks. This was demonstrated by the German ship Christine, which grounded at the mouth of the Willamette a few weks ago, and the necessary towing and light erage to bring the vessel Into deep water cost tha owners $000. Two more wheat laden vessels ars ready to leave Portland, but their departure will likely be deluytd until more favorable weather stts In. The whereabouts of the British ship Matttrlcrn, tow on her way down the river, Is lost to the Portland papers, or at least one would be led to think so on looking over their marine columns, for no -nentlon Is made of her tim e her de parture from Portland the first of the week. News regarding the ChriBtlne, Garnet Hill and other vessels of the grain fleet that have met with mishaps and de layed a week or two, as the cane may be, by being stuck on the sandbars, was omitted at the time by all of the Port land dallies and nothing Is krown of th'-sc accidents so far as the public there Is con cerned. A vessel's departurs from Port land and her sailing from the Columbia river Is always noted by Portland's pa pers, but news regarding accidents and delays occuring to vessels on the way down the river Is always supprersed. probably this is dons by ths Oregonlan for the purpose of demonstrating that the river Is deep enough for ships Ut pass through at any stags of water. "An open river, of course, it essential to Astoria's realization of all tbs possi bilities of her dfivulolpment," said one of the Kajrtern Oregon visitors yesterday; -out i can plainly sco that what we farm, era and you Astorians as well most nec-d at this tlmo Is an open railway. Get your common point seu tl'-d ana your i-ellway opene-J, and e can afford to spend the years of tlmo which will be required by the slow movements of the government In securing through river transportation to Astoria, Mind you, I am in favor of an open river as much as anybody, but I fear some of the present agitation In that direction is be liiii fostered by the transportation com-p-tnlcs, who fear the result to them of an in mediate open railway more than they do a long-distant, future open river. Don't let your people be fooled Into any diversion or scattering of your efforts aid the effect already created for an open railway communication with the great grain fields of ths Inland Empire by the talk of nn, open river.
