Johnstone relurnl from a crulne msde throunh the country trib utary to tho Necanlcum creek in com p.iny w.th a reprei-ntatl of J. U. ly. of the firm of l.iy ItM., builders of the Cascades locks, who IntenJ purchos Init a Urito timber tr.ict In th.t vicinity. Mr. Johnston would not talk of his trip further than to say he hd crulsid town ships i-lA and t-S. all of which are tributary to the Necanlcum. and contain about a billion feet of timber. It Is learned from other source, how ever, that the lny Hros. have con-em-nlated the purchase of this tract of land for some time. The timber on the town ship In question Is not as food as In other portions of the county, but It Is more accessible and requires lens capital o phice in tidewater. Nearly all of this timber can be betged by teums and put In tidewater at small expense. It Is stat ed that In connection with the sale of this tract of timber, the Day Rn. are about to erect a large sawmill with a rapacity of 1j0.AU feet of lumber a day. It Is thouirht the mill will be located at 3--side. The con tent Is attracting much attention, and speculation !s rife as t who will mrry off the title of champion. The class A nirn all bowl very ewnly. and the winner w.ll have to play tril bill. The latcit bui:--tin i-jue-l or-.iiws that Flnnlgan is In the l'-ad for the Wis. medal. lie has an avrae of ellirhlly less than i. Several of the handicap men are close up to him. and he w.ll doubtless lose the lead the coming week. It Is believed that he could not win the medals If an average of 30 only were neceary. Cooper, the highbinder, is well up to Finnlgan, but he has bowled 22 of the nerary Z games, and will have to make three great scores to pull himself up to 40. As Unual, Cooper has about monopolized the record board the past week, although Wise suceeded In besting one of his scores. Councilman Hansen Is In seriou trouble. He Is now under arrest, charged with larceny, and his rase will come op In the Justice's court tomorrow. Hi of fense Is a serious one. and. although he la now out on ball, he Is under police surveillance. Last Thursday August Feldman went hunting and killed "two female mallard ducks." It was his In tention to preeent them to a lady ac quaintance, and he told a few of the boys about it. Thursday evening -the ducks were stolen and a pair of old shoes sub stituted. Mr. Feldman, unaware of the Joke that had been played upon him, rook the package of old shoe and, going to the lady's house, made a neat presenta tion sp-eh. The lady waa delighted at Mr. Feldman' klndnens and Invited him to dinner on Friday. He leornwl of the Joke when he called for dinner, nnd then and there determined to "get even." In vwttlgatlon disclosed the fact that Coun cilman Hansen had wilfully, maliciously and felonously ".-opied out" the ducks, and a warrant was "sworn" out before Judg Hughes for his arrest. All "the boys" aro members, or the Red Men, nnd they were to visit tho Coble lodge yes terday. Just before the boa,t left her dock fx-puly Sheriff Hinder appeared up on the scene and served tho warrant on Mr. Hansen. The alderman waa dumb founded. He wanted to know whether or not "It was a Josh," but was assured by Deputy Hinder that he was wanted for larceny. Only a few of the Red Men had been told of tho affair, nnd, with the exception of tho "wise" ones, all were surprised to think the popular young councilman had fractured the law. In order to allow the lodge to proceed n Its way to Coble, bonds were, fiirnihlc fj by some of Mr. Hansen's friends. Mr. Feldman hus not yet recovered the ducks, but Iioes to net satisfaction through process of law tomorrow. Manwhlle he and Councilman Hansen aro the butt of the practical Jokers around town. A visit to tho county Jail is not n pbasant pastime, although not devoid of Interest. It Is a pleasure which most people fon-ifo, though many thlnga con nected wl'h crimes and the enforcement of the law hang on the still Iron walls of the rooms. There I an air of repose discernable nmong all of Jailor Hinder' boarders, and tho Interior of the building Is scrupulously rlenn. The most Interest ing spot, perhaps, Inside tho old building is the room on the left as one enters tho oiiier ball. Hanging on tho wall is a manlla ropo which swung Hansen Into eternity. Hansen waa hanged In the court house yard about flvo yeirs ago for tho murdo of his wife, near Rear Creek. The leaden weights used on Han sen' feet and the electric button which gave the signal that launched him Into the great unknown hn bee Id e II. In thl room are slowed awsy the rffecli of aver unfortunate that ro now con lined or havrt dbsl In the tate lusaini -sylum, A story, no doubt, hangs around every article this little r'm comam slorle f suffering, rrlme and detith. Among the four prisoners Is a Chinaman, who was rrtted at Seaside by a deputy Vniled State marshal from IVrttand for helne; without reglstrallot) Vi'r and unlawfully In the country, lie ll be given a hearing before Vnlte.1 ttlale Commissioner Thomson tomorrow. Win, llenrv, who Is serving a semen, of six month for petty larceny, employs his time In making fancy basket. This Is tho irlnclt occupation of tho prisoners coiillned lit the Jail for any length of time, Zulovlch. a ho m taken to the pcntton'tlary to serve a year's sentence for ntanalauMhter, taught Henry the art Zulovlch himself being tauiiht by a prls oner whose sentence expired some time before. The sentence of Jones and Huge man. convicted of petty larceny, will not expire until May, Jones served a sen tcnoo previously for the same offence, and on the day he was lltcrtcd stole an overcoat and a pair of hie from two different parties. He succeeded In con vlnoMtg the grand Jury of his Innocence In the flint offense, but was sentenced In the (notice's court to six months on ih latter charge. He Is a desperate crook ami na chance are taken with him by Jailer Hinder.
