From the time of that disembarkation, during the following 19 duys of the campaign, he kept the Spani ards guessing as to what the next move would be." UUHJD8I1ED ATTENDS THE KEITULii'AN' CONVENTION. Two Opposing Colorado Factions Clash and One Man Was Killed. Another Being Wounded. COLORADO SPRINGS. Col.. 6ept ". Early this mornlntj a riot occurred In the Colorado Springs opera house between Si men representing State Clulrmtin Blood and the Teller fuctlon of the silver repub lican parly, and Sheriff Boynton and Chief of Police Qustrlght, with about 75 men representing the Wolcott-Steven faction. Charles Harris, of Denver, was killed, being shot through the bowels. An un known man was seriously Injured. It seems tonight that all danger of fur ther serious trouble between the two fac tions Of tho silver republicans has been removed. This afternoon the members of the Blood faction made application before Judue Harris, of the district court, tor a writ of mandamus, compelling Sheriff Boynton to turn over the opera house to them. Tonight tho cltliens of Colorado "These were the circumstances under springs took tho matter In hand and the which General Miles hft Washington, ar- result was a compromise, by which both Inatlng a joint ticket consisting of two congressmen and two supreme Judges. The results of today's session were the forming of permanent organisation, by each convention and the appointment of conference committee to perfect fusion. The day was almost featureless and was consumed with routine matters. The only contest waa In the populist convention on temporary chairman. J. B. Hart, who was chosen, met with some opposition from the opponents of Governor Rogers, who favor the endorsement of Congress man James Hamilton Lewis for United States sea tor. ( United States Senator George Turner, In an address to the sliver republicans, adroitly answered' the question whether he was a populist or a silver republican ty saying that "belonging to any one of the three great parties of reform is pref erable to being a member of the gold bug republican party." There la a small element In the demo cratic convention that Is opposed to the surrender of the putty name, and a reso lution setting this forth was Introduced, more with a view of expressing a protest than a determination to press the matter. The undercurrents of the convention In dicate that fusion wilt be easily accom plished. It Is pretty generally conceded that the populists will secure both su preme judges and that Congressman Lewis and Congressman Jones will be renominated. The populist convention has among its delegates one woman, Mrs. Peters, of Clullam county, who was seated on her husband's proxy. A fight will be mad: to have a declara tion In the different platforms In favor of female suttrag. u DON'T KNOW WHAT HE IS. When Senator Turner ascended the ros trum to address the sliver republican state convention tonight, Chairman Dem attos Interrupted him, saying: "I, with many others, would like a positive expression from the senator as charged, or a free silver republican." Benator Turner aald: "This is the first time sine my election that I have taken an opportunity to make specific reply to the many demands of a like kind. Belonging to any one of t three great parties of reform is preferable to being a member of the gold bug repub lican party. "The legislature which elected me was dominated by member of the people's party. At my request, I was entered In the Congressional Record as a member of the people's party, but the republican papers of the east were unable to dia tingulsh between the people's party ol Washington and the populist party, and constantly referred to me as a populist. I owe my allegiance to all of the three parties, and I consider It an honor to be long to such an organisation." . MEETING OF THE DEMOCRATS. At the evening session of the demo cratlo convention a platform waa submit' ted. It affirms allegiance to the Chicago platform of '96. and endorses W. J. Bryan. The platform denounces as unfair and bit terly partisan the discrimination of the secretary of war as carried out by his de partment against the volunteers from this state In requiring them to remain at home, while troops in vast numbers from the eastern states were transported, at enormous cost across tne continent and forwarded to the seat of war at Manila; that the reason the volunteers from Washington have not participated tn the splendid achievements of the land and naval forces of the nation at Manila is through no lack of courage or efficiency on ttvsir part, but is wholly chargeable to the partisanship and general incom petency of the war department The Platform Indorses the course pur sued by United States Senator Turner, and, continuing, says: "We look with exulting pride at the brilliant records made In congress by our own illustrious congressman, James Ham ilton Lewis ana "W. C. Jones." On territorial expanshlon. It says: "While we do not favor an aggressive policy of general territorial expansion, we are opposed to the surrender to Spain of any of the territory that has been ac quired by American valor and the expen diture of the blood and treasure of our people of any Spanish colonies which have co-operated with our forces against our enemy In the late war. "We favor the fullest Investigation of all conditions existing In the Philippine Islands affecting the Interests and obliga tions of our country In the matter of their future treatment and disposition, to the end that final action In relation thereto shall be Intelligent and based upon full knowledge of all the facts that can af fect the Interests of the United States." The joint conference committee was In secret session until midnight The only conclusion reached was that the ticket be known as the people's party, and that have a congressman. A motion that thr democrats hare one judge was adopted, but afterwards reconsidered, leaving the matter undecided. POPULISTS IN SESSION. At tonight's session of tne popull.it con vention Metcalf. of Steven county, In troduced the foilowtn resolution, which was unanimously adopted: "Whereas, As It Is rumored that there Is a strong move on foot In certain quar ters to Induce the peoprs's party to sur render their party nam In the event of fusion with the free silver republicans and democrats "Resolved. That it I the sense of this convention that, should such fusion be effected, the people's party will not con sent to surrendering its party name, and that the conference committee selected to confer with the free silver republican and democrats Is hereby Instructed that It ha no power or authority to consider such a propostllon In it deliberation with the comerence committee appointed by the free silver republican and demo crat." Cline, of Thurston, offered a motion to the effect that the next United State senator should come from the people's party. Considerable discussion followed. The matter finally was settled by laying it on the table until the conference com mittee made Its report to the convention. After the convention bad concluded Its business for the night it waa addressed by United State Senator Turner. THE MARQUIS OF DUFFERIN PAYS TRIBUTE TO AMERICA.
