Wharton Barker and Ignatius Donnolly
Nominated for President and Vice-rresldent-Serlous

CINCINATTI. Sept. 6.-The mlddlc-of-tlio-iouil
populists td.iy reorgnnliod tho
iwople' party, renewed Its former declar
ation of principles, and nominated Its na
tional 4lcktl two years and two months
In advance ut the date of election. The
object of this early lotion was to head off
any such fusion as that of IVD6.
While the radicals controlled the con
vention, they could not have carried out
their program without a bolt from the
northern dulMlcs. The western and
southern dtWirates nominated Wharton
Darker for president and lgmuius Don
nolly for vice-president, and declared the
prlticlpl'.s of the rejrKanliod paarty. The
eastern titutes were not rvpresented. It
was the smullust oatiutiul convention on
record, and K hail the longest platform
on rword one of over T.UiO words. Most
I of the uauul rules of conventions were lg
' nored. as most of the deleirates came with
self-ctinstHuted credentials, owing to the
confusion over the uill. It ws a very
noisy convention. undt no counex'ted re
port of the proceedings will ever be re
corded. While the people's party was
heretofore divided on the Issue of fusion.
It has now been find that even the snti
tuslon&als are badly divided, and that
fighting among the mlddle-of-the-roaders
themselves has just begun.
Previous to the adoption of the address
to the people, Foster, of Minnesota, cre
ated a scene by his bitter objections, and
was Issued down, as were others of th
Butler faction.
A bitter discussion then followed on the
motion to proceed with nominations for
president and vice-president. The Butler
faction moved to amend by referring the
whole mutter to their national committee.
This caused a great disturbance and the
Butler men were Knocked out. Joseph
Palmer, of Illinois, then culled tho Butler
faction together In another part of the
hull, and It was announced they would
bolt and leave the hall If (he motion to
proceed with nominations prevailed. The
disturbance of tho small crowd became
so tierce thut Mr. Hasebett, manager of
the Lyceum, requested the assemblage to
vacate the hall, as he was apprehensive of
the security of his property.
Tho Butler faction, led by Palmer, of
Illinois, then left the hull, and the other
faction proceeded with tho nominations.
After numerous nominating and second
ing speeches In presenting the two names
for president, a, ballot wits taken, result
ing as follows: '
Wharton Barker, of Pennsylvania, 12S4-5;
iRtiutius Donnelly, of Minnesota, 99 1-3.
On motion of Donnelly the nomination
of Barker w-as made unanimous,
Ignatius Donnelly w-as then nominated
by acclamation for vice-president.
A very Ioiik platform was adopted,
which Incorporates tho provisions of the
Omaha platform. Tho declarations in
the platform do not differ from those of
other platforms, except In the plank
which especially denounces Senator Mart
en Butler, of North Carolina, as chair
man of their national committee, for at
tempting "to drive the populist party Into
the democratic parly."
Tht resolutions also provide for the re-

NO REENFORCEMENT3 FOR
THE PACIFIC STATION.
BaKlnhlp Oregon Will Be Sent Home,
But Monterey and Monadnock Musi
Remain at Manila.
WASHINGTON. Sept e.-Actlng Secre
tary Allen said today that the navy de
partment had not yet finally determined
upon sending reinforcements to th Pa
cific station. It is not deemed safe nor
prudent at this time to withdraw the
Monterey and Monadnock from the Asi
atic station. Tb case is different, bow
ever, wtth the battleship Oregon. Her
withdrawal and return to the Pacific
coast would leave several effective Iron
clads on the Atlantic station, and, in view
of the completion of the powerful battle
ships Kearsarge and Kentucky, It Is pos
sible that even another Ironclad may be
spared from the Atlantic fleet to accom
pany the Oregoa
It Is scarcely expected that Captain
Barker, present commander of the Ore
gon, would retain that command In the
event that the ship Is sent back to the
Pacific. He served the full period of time
which unwritten hvw requires of an of
ficer of his grade, and It la probable that
he will prefer shore duty while awaiting
his promotion to the next grade.
