A divided republican party cannot curry Clatsop county at th. coming election. So self-evident a proposition b not open to discuseloi it admits of no argument. Worse disaster might come, of course, than the election of a populist or demo, cratlc administration In Clatsop county, but no republican who realties the uncer tainty involved in the outcome of the next state campaign wants to see so strong a republican county as Clatsop contribute to the election of a populist or democratic legislature and state administration. To be forewarned Is to be forv.irm-t. and it wise counsel is allowed to prevail. Clat sop county need not be lost on cither county or state ticket. Tut the time and place to foreguard against party defeat Is before and at the primary election. If the republican party of Clatsop county la to be saved from ignominious and crushing defeat the work necessary for Its salvation cannot be post poned until after the nomination of the county ticket. The time has gone by when In any Intelligent community the cry of party regularity will suffice to keep voters In line for platforms or tan- didates that do not meet with unqualified respect and approval. Never In Amer'.cau history has there been a better and great er manifestation of party Independence than in the last presidential election. Without the rupture of party ties and that too by members of a political or ganization famous for Its cohesion in the fare of violent Internal disturbance-William McKlnley would not now be presi dent. This superb exhibition of manhood and Independence for the sake of princi pal Is destined to become contagion.. It will dominate future national elections. Irs effects have already been felt In Mate anil municipal contests throughout the country. To cite . x imples would be ;u-pei.-uous; the render finds them In every dally paper. All ovr the land there is a spontaneous, determined and unrelenting revolt against machine politics the ruio of iMiHlic.il lifis who S'ck to control all public places and direct every film rloii and department of municipal, county .-ml state government for their own pursues and for the reward and enrichment of parasites and favorites. The Astorlan believes In leadership. It believes In party organisation, hut It does not believe that either leadership or or ganization should be the end of political systems. It believes that they should be the means to the end. and that end nothing else than the highest Interests of the people. When a party long In con trol of public affairs becomes the tool of the presiding boss In control of the party machinery, who uses It in furtherance of his own political purposes and private ends, prostituting its power and Influence for the sake of the patronage and spoils of office It brings, It Is manifest some form of effectual purging and reform Is necessary for the public good. Such a state of political affairs exists in Clatsop county today, but it Is a condition which the people will not submit to any longer. There must be a ehungi there will be a change at the coming election. Already the arrogance of the ring is evident In the preparations ugreed on for holding the April primaries, and the question which will soon confront the republican voters ot the county Is whether this ring, by and through the questionable methods usual at the primary elections and In the party conventions, shall be permitted to carry out Its will In the selection of delegates and the nomination of candidates, or whether there shall be the free and un trammelod expression of popular senti ment which alone can save the republi can party of Clatsop county from defeat at the general election. The republicans of Clatsop county are about to face a grave crisis. They ore confronted with a serlouB Btate of affairs. The question they will be called on to de cide at the primaries Is whether ihcy hall resume control and management ! their party's affairs, or whether they will permit a few ring politicians to continue to use Us organisation, as In years past, for Ihclr own selfish purposes and for the aggrandisement of a clique of men to whom these politicians have mortgaged the county offices. Let all good rvpildl. cans understand that unless they send up delegnli-s to the county convention who will go In for a new deal as to party or ganisation: who will nominal a county ticket which will stand prvctivncnlly for an administration of coun.y i.ffalrs In the Interest of the county; a :1c Vt which will stand for decent politics and h.mcst gov ernment: for fierdwi of compctil'on cut a fair field for all In public an. I party fa vors: a ticket which will stand above all things for the people's .nt.'rv.ts end against those of the bosses -there will he a new political oru.inu ulon forimd In Clatsop county oefo.v the rcc ular election. When such a slate ol .-.ff.ilrs exists In a ru'.lrg Mtt as exists here today, with an opposition too wuk or oorrui t to exert the .omviliu in:!n- ence that an opposition -r: should al ways exert, then It Is that the spruces ot an independent, non-pjrils.in body, ecu. Ih'sed of the best rltlxvns of all parties, may lc of Inestimable b. netlt by prodd ing a common vantage ground upon which all cltiiens dlut--d with fac tionalism, tnwsi.m. and corruption may stand and unite In breaking the power of the machine. This Is a work which may command the Influence, the time, the personal sacrifice and the votes of alt good citizens In Clatsop eou.ity. A cru sade which once begun will end only when there is respect for law, f-odom from corruption, and when tvery tltiicn is guaranteed that a public orh.v shall be not a part of an uunru;n;' v,i m i chine, but a public trust faithfully ad ministered for the ben. tu of th,- !-(.;, and the whole people. I'.IG PRICK FOR A TROKKX HEART. Sot long since a Danville. Ill , Jury or dered the male defendant in a breach of promise case to pay the decidedly compe tent sum of IM.ra.U to the afflicted fatr one. This was thought to he the largest amount ever awarded by a Jury In a simi lar action. Though It Is a pretty high estimate of blighted affection, there is another estimate which If not In dollars and cents exactly as high, yet In gen eral consideration of excellence reaches as lofty an altitude. That Is the estimate of the people in their general verdict as to the efficacy of Hostetter's Stomach Hit ters as a remedy for constitution. The action of this gentle, but effective. I.na- live is never accompanied by the griping and other abdominal disturbance which precedes or accompany the operation of a griping cathartic. Moreover, It Is an Incomparable remedy for and preventa tive of malarial, rheumatic and kidney complaints, a never falling means of In vigorating the stomach and nervous sys tem, and a promoter of appetite and sleep.
