Is In si pitiable phyilcal con dition and is under the care of phyrt. elans. Like most of the other. Rlvterra has given evidence during the contest of partially losing his mind. The awful strain froai th first day of riding has to measure mentally unbalanced him and this afternoon he reaped from his wheel and made an assault on an Imaginary foe in one of the boxen, (wearing and Jabber- Trig in his native tongue. His trainer rushed to Wrh and put htm on hla wheel but after making a few more taps he re peated the performance wth more of an Insane rag? than he had at first demon strated. The result was that Rlvlarro had to be taken from the track to re turn no more. Another who baa quit is 'Moore. He had a bad fall during the afternoon. While going at a high rate of speed his crashed Into a rail ani cut himself badly. He was carried off the track almost un conscious. The shock .as too great for his dilapidated condition, and Moore wtll be seen no more In tbe race. But Miller, who ls a wonderful specimen of physical Strength, still plods along. He has ground! out more miles In a given time on his wheel than any man before. He bos sub sisted under the most telling strain with' less sleep than was thought possible for any man. and with an examination of htm tonight by surgeons It was disclosed that hto condltlno was normal, and wtrn the exception of muscular soreness and a slight deadness or the limbs be was in excellent condition and will be able to continue to the end without much danger of a collapse. Rice, who is second man In the contest, though nearly a hundred miles behind the leader. Is standing by his colors wtth' dogaed determination. It now appears that a large part, if not all of this deficiency, which, Mr. Spofford promptly made good out of his own pock et, will be accounted for by a great batch of old money orders which the absent minded librarian forgot to cash.. The postoffice department gets a great many records of money orders from postmasters which are never presented for paymnt by the parties receiving them, A number of Vhese unearned orders are addressed to the librarian of congress, and are, per. haps greater than all the others com. bined.
