Charles Anderson Dana was the patri
arch of American Journalism. Thru ugh
the. ooltunn of the Xew York Sun, his
profound scholarship, radhutt wit, and
maJtohlfSB style have Influenced and In.
spired newspaper writers all over Amer
ica. His career has been remarkable, and
It is not too much to say that for the
last twenty-five years ho baa exerted
mora Influence than any other man in
the country. Since ho secured control
of the Sun, In 1SS3, that paper has been
reoornixed by newspaper men gvneraily
aa model for style, accuracy nd eru.
iition. It has been said that he so thor
oughly Impressed his Individuality upon
the Sun and its staff of principal writers
that none could tell from the editorial
columns of the paper whether Mr. Dana
had contributed a Hne or not. So thor
oughly trad he come to be understood,
and so strongly marked was his style and
character that each individual who had
to do with the expression of the paper'
policy knew instinctively Just what Mr.
Dana Would approve and what not.
Thar Is no other editor in New York
who at all approaches him, and bis death
will be an Irreparable loss not merely to
the newspaper profession, but he will be
nil ow and mourned among the truly
treat In the Intellectual and literary
world everywhere.
Within two weeks over eight millions
n gold lias arrived la New York from
London. Already there Is so much gold
coin in use Uiat Its Inconvenience is I
keenly felt, and there is a demand upon !
the treasury to accept gold on deposit
and Issue gold certificates therefor.
There has been some formal discussion 1
f fhl. K.. .k- . . I

The point of Interest was a decision j
made by Secretary Carlisle when the
treasury gold fell below $100.(m.1i), that
the reserve tiering once fallen be;w the
amount mentioned, gold certificates

Issue was specially authorized by con
gress. The soundness of this decision Is
questioned by the best authorities. It la
no new thing for one secretary to re
verse a decision made by a previous one,
and It is the belief m financial circles In
the Baat that Secretary Gage w:il do
this. The business world prefers cur
rency, because of Its convenience. Paper

Cashier
Muhleman. of the sub-treasury in Xew
York, speaking of the matter, said a day
or two ago that ther? seemed to be an
erroneous Idea in some quarters that
there was now an inconvenient shortage
of currency. This, he saad, was not the
eise, and he added thut any action of the
treasury officials which might convey
that impression was, in his opinion,
taken because they doslred such a short
age and were shaping their course at
present with a Me to the need of a
large amount of currency during Octo

The election of Henry George would
not only be a great oakunlty to New

m our free government abroad, than any
other political event that la within the
range of possibility. Mr. George Is a
man of unquestioned Integrity and ad
ifttd ability, but he is a socialist on a
filgh and apparently decent plane, wh le
bis teUChngs run down through all the
political vagaries of the day until they
reach and command the enthusiasm of
the anarchist. It now seems reasonably
safe to assume tha,t Mr. George w:il
