A CAMPAIGN FEATURE.
The silver campaign In both Ohio rnd
Kentucky I being conducted on rather
trivial tines. It seems to be considered
sufficient to show that at one time or
another certain eminent republicans and
certain eminent gold democrats spoke or
wrote or voted In favor of the free coin
age of silver. Those old utterances and
vo'ee are now being spread before the
people, and upon them Is made to rest
the whole contention that the free coin,
age of silver at 1 to 1 at this day,
would be a wise policy for this country
to adopt.
In Ohio Mr. McKlnleys' record is be
ing drawn upon for this kind of material.
In Kentucky the records of Mr. Carlisle
and Mr. Watterson are being mined for
It. Mr. Bynum likewise Is confronted
on his stumping Tours for sound money
by sentiments friendly to silver, which
he uttered while In congress. But these
men have for explanation of their pres.
ent position the fact that they have
grown with the times. Tht silver ques
tion of half a dozen or twenty years
ago la not the sSlver question of this
year, by any manner of means. It Is
another question altogether, and must be
met as It now exists. The question is.
with the whole commercial world of
any consequence committed to the gold
standard, shall this government cut loose
from all such associations and adopt
a policy which would reduce Its finances'
Immediately and disastrously to a silver
basis? 9ound money men, democrats
and republicans - alike, say no. What
these same men may have said in years
past when their lights were different
and the question was different is of
no moment today, as Impeaching either
their Intelligence or their integrity.
It is aluogether different, however.
In cases Ike those of Mr. Gorman in
Huxykind. Mr. Kerr in Pennsylvania,
Mr. Sheehan, the Tammany leader In
Now York, and Geo. Fred Williams in
Massachusetts. Those men, up to the
holding of the Chicago convention, were
gold men. It Is of record. They do not
deny It. But suddenly, and not as the
result of any change of conviction on
their part, they went over to silver.
They permitted a political committee to
reverse them completely on the whole
money question. Mr. Williams and Mr.
Kerr are still for silver. Although they
changed so suddenly, they are sticking.
Mr. Gorman and Mr. Sheehan are wob
bling. They are wobblers by nature. But
If a change of base on this money ques.
Lion Is so repugnant to silver men In
Ohio and Kentucky, and argu-s to them
sucb faithlessness in Mr. Carlisle ami
others, what have they to say about
these capersj of their friends and asso
ciates In the east? Is it faithlessness
to change from sliver to gold, but the
highest patriotism to change from gold
to silver?
SUGAR TRUST AND HAWAII.
Philadelphia Press.
A free (trade democratic newspaper,
probably Ignorant of the facts, asserts
that the sugar trust, now thfcu the new
tariff bill is on the statute books, has no
Interest in the Hawaiian question, as
the trust only supplies sugar east of the
Rocky Mountains. There is not a pound
of cane sugar refined In the United States
west of the Rocky Mountains except In
trust refineries. And, moreover, there
Js only one beet sugar refinery In Cal
ifornia In which the trust Is not large.
