Th.tiwurer-s report wns washed i for with unusual eagerness to know. what amount of mony is In the 'ftas. ury, and for what amount the additional i bond would have to be given. but the report passed through the hands of the governor, secretary of state and tr.ns. urer without being made public, and it sal.l thai nc amwnt of Itt'iuiry has j yet been sum lent to elicit Information as to the contents of that highly 1m- portant official document. The situation is one cer tainly demanding some explanation, and It Is sincerely hoid that one will be. forthcoming and that when made it will turn out to be of such a nature as will bei satisfactory to the people. What la the matter with Astoria? This Is the question being asked on all sides. The papers are full of dispatches stating that there are not vessels enough on the coast to handle the big wheat crops of Oregon, Washington and California. California complains that it cannot get ships enough to bring the wheat from Puget Sound and Oregon to Snn Fran cisco for shipment. Why should Oregon and Washington wheat go to San Fran cisco to be shipped abroad T If Portland nnd the Sound have not harbor room enough for the lonrtlnjr of the hsit raised In UiIk eeotlon f country, there ts PHim wiouith In Astoria's h.trbor to load the Heels of th world.
