The frantic efforts of the Bry unite and dvmagvglc press to make capital out of the coal mlnrs' strike would amuse all weil-lnformed people If It were not such a dastardly aitemtH to confuse and mis lend the minds of Ignorant and unthink ing people, by a deliberate perversljn of the real farts in the auto. If any laboring man will Uike the pains to In vestigate the matter for himself he will finil that the reason why the stride waa brought about In the very opposite of that alleged by these newspapers for lt-.Thoy represent that times have grown worse instead of better since McKinley's election, and that the strike Is. due to the discouragement of the miners over Un continued low wikb they ere re ceiving. Now, the fact' U. the strike was ordered at this particular date for the express reason that time are grow ing better, and it la so stated in the official order calling the strike. TheleTal,y f a ""W For " of ' . L 1 , . W. . . .. ll . rate which the miners are now demand ing wa fixed upon at the last annu.U convention of- the United Mine Workers, held &.t Columbus. Ohio. In January. It was provided at that time that the scale decided on wa not to go Into effect Immediately, but the proper time was left to be fixed by the national executive board and the district presidents. These official have decided that this Is the proper time to enforce the scale, and the reasons for the strike Is given in their order a follows: "The sign of "the time are that business Is reviving, "that an upward tendency In prices of "all products Is apparent. In the gen "erai bmtlm-es revival and industrial Im provement we ought to share, and Jf we "do cot attempt to share we shall he "false to ourselves and those dependant "upon us." If this is the lang-iag? of the order under which nearly a quarter of a million men abandoned their work a few days ago and ajiy interested per son may verify the truth of it by a letter of Inquiry to any assembly of the United Mine Workers what are the read ers of populist papers to think of the Intelligence or sincerity of the men who run and have run these papers? Nor Is this all tlmt may be learned with profit by those who arc disposed to ac cept Bryan's statements and the fulml nations of populist organs as law and gospel. Secretary Ryan, who signs the strike order for the United Mine Work ers, says the miner under the old icnle can make but T5 cent a day when working nil day, and that many of th-in averag? but half time every day. That gives the miner and his family but 37 1-2 cent a day for support. But wliat lo the reason the wage rate Is so low? Mr. Ryan says it Is the interna competition among the mine-owners. He declares that "the Insane competition Inaugurated by the coal operators has brought about a condition of suffering and destitution wlucn was never equaled. in other words, the coal companies are running such a close rivalry thfct they have cheapened coal below profliaLK- produc tion. In order lo undersell each mother. The strike, then, reasoning from Mr. Ryan's, statement, must be intended to stop competition, and raise the price of coal to consumers. This Is Interesting fnforraition, when one remembers that the workingmen are supposed be bitterly opposed to all combination or trusts which restrict trade and destroy competition. Yet hre are 2iO,;flO men striking- to prevent competition, and for ;o other purpose than to put up the price of r necessary article to the con suming public. There could be no better Illustration of the difference between the tlieorelical and practical side of an eoenomleal question. The truth Is, In this or any other caae, that any product Cun be too cheap. Coal or anychlnsr r!s Is loo cheap when either the labor or capital required to produce It doe not receive fair returns. This is a plain, common-sense fact, and no amount of ophlstry or demagogic argument can re- I fute It. The mine-workers evidently un Irretand the truth of this proportion nn.l jo do the mliwnwnera, who Are said to be secretly Instigating and porting the strike by every mean In their power. The McKlnN y administration was elect od for four years' Wm, end yet there are people who are illsewtlsiVnI because It hs not done In four months wh.i was set down for It task for four years, No admlnlMratlon ever ma.le such gviod lime In carrying out its pledge in tli opening month of Its torm. and It very small and contemptible In state men of the Bryan school to keep harp ing on the liu.k of getuT.il prosperity before the republicans have had a chance to complete hglslutlon of any sort. tequlrvd four years' of manipulation on the part of the democrat to province the condition in which McKlnl.-y found the country when he took eharyv, and surely ought not to be expected! that be can undo all the mischief of those four venr In the four month that h ha had control. THE OBJECTION NOT GOOD, There are people who have objections to advertising matter in the columns of a newspaper. The ground of objection Is that they do not want to read ad vertlsements. Now this objection Is not good, for oftentimes these advertise ments convey valuable information. For Instance, how else would the trav- eling public learn of the excellent din ing car service of the Wisconsin Cen tral lines between St. Paul and Chicago, or the general comfort of traveling over this popular line.
