Second, It help him to solve the problem of hi vocation by having access to a valuable reference li brary. If this wer; jr.iy true of the great mass of our workerr, we believe that all line of human indus try would be dignified, enlarged and en nobled. The public library plays an Im portant part In elevating the mor.il tone of the people, and does more good in a quiet way than any other Institution. The library movement is steadily moving westward, and proud New England ccn no longer boast of having the snly public libraries ln our country'- The xbove ar ticle from the pen of C. P. LongwtH, ir. the June "Home and Country," Is of such Interest and importance that w; have published It In Its entirety. The Uard of directors of our own public library have struggled for years to maintain it ln existence simply, without any thou,-i t of reward, or thanks, even; have for years left nothing of self-sacrifice or ep.rnes: effort undone, if only they could manage to keep open the library doors, and oc casionally add to the wjll-select1 list of books already on its shelves, head ers of the Astorlan know that the city through Its council appropriated forty dollars per month to help ln this work. The amount was a little over half enough to meet the monthly expenses, but hen other city appropriations were cut, this was also, so that now it only covers half of the expenses. la many Eastern cities, much smaller than Astoria, public libra ries have been either endowed by public spirited citizens with a sum of sufficient amount that the interest covers all cx expenses, or by the payment monthly of a certain amount to the same object, their name are forever held In kindly remem brance by the many who have profited by their generosity. Are there not those of Independent Income In our own city who will of their abundance contribute monthly a sum suffl'Hent to cover the amount actually necessary to pay the monthly expenses and leave the library board free to gather by entertainments and otherwise enough money to occasion ally add new books? Ten dollars a month from three different eonlrttxit.v or tlve dollars each from six. mould mot, with the aid now received from the city, .ill actual monthly expenses.
