A visitor In the city, who became much Interested In Watching the 0Hratlons nt several of the large canneries, suggested that after the close of fishing season these unnerles might profitably engage In the business of canning fruit. With a rullrond to Astoria, apples, peaches, pears, etc.. might be brought here quickly and -heap. ly from the orchards, and being packed right nt the ocean shipping docks, both the cost of foreign and domestic trans portation would lie reduced to the mini mum. The subject would seem to he worthy of careful investigation, both b fruit nien and cannorymen. It was hinted yesterday that since the oiienlng of the Ogden Gateway, a comhi- .nation was likely to be made In the near future between the White Collar line and the railroad on through business fir the season. The arrangement, It was stated, would be a particularly beneficial one to the Southern Pacific, which already Is carrying a large portion of the salmon out of Astoria for Eastern markets. With an emphasized traffic arrangement between the Southern, Union and hlte Collar line, a strong combination would be ef fected, which might not only be able to meet all combination ir. rates, but wonld le equal to the best In the matter of time. No official of either line could be found yesterday to corroborate the rumor but it would not be a surprising matter If it were found to be correct. Changes In railroad traffic arrangements are becom ing so frequent, and are of such Import ance that the public nowadays Is sur prised at nothing.
