Princeton's N.-w Pltchlne Gun Success fully Tried on Thursday. Princeton, N. J.. June 11. Princeton's patent baseball pitching gun was a decid ed success yesterday, eight strike-o'its, one hac on hall, one wild pitch and four safe hits being the record In tr.ree Innings In the tlrst test of the machine's practicability in an actual game. Nines representing the Ivy Club and Ttgar Inn, two of Princeton's social clubs, played a match game, using the gun to pil.'h for lioth tennis, ami the contest attract M a large crowd of Interested sH'cl:vtors. prominent among whom were Mrs. CI e latal. with a party of friends, and maay Prlnecton professors, who came to see with what success the Princeton Inven tion would meet. The gun Is discharged by the batsman, who, when ready for the ImiII to lie delivered, steps upon an electrical Intercepting- plate, connected with wires with a trigger on the can non. The speed with which the ball Is thrown is regulated by compressed air, and a prong-like projector from the can non's mouth Imparts a rotary motion to the sphere when dlscliargiM, producing a curve In any direction according as the position of the projecting prongs ! changed. There is but one serious defect In the operation of the machine that will prevent Its use In games, and that is the long time required for reloading. This was especially noticeable In yesterday's game, because the Intercepting plate was out of order and the frequent delays ne cessitated thereby did not allow the game to lie finished. Three Innings were play ed. During the tlrst Inning the '.xitsmen were timid about standing near the plate, and the big out-curves caused them to Jump back, but as the gun threw strikes In every Instance, they plucked up cour age, stood closer to the plate, nnd suc ceeded occasionally In making safe hits. The giime was uninteresting, excepting for the novelty of seeing the pitcher's box occupied by a machine. The Ivy Club won by a socre of 7 to 3. DICTATOR BARRIOS.
