declared that the elements opposed to
the resolution. Fairbanks tried to
tilists, hud furnished the bulk of the
support In favor of the resolution, and
that the foreign ooliey of the admin
istration was thus to 1' dictated by Its
opponents. He expressed the fear also
that the resolution would lead to war
with Spain. Spooner added his protedtt
against tying the hands of the adminis
tration. Gorman closed the deate. re
senting the suggestion that party lines
were drawn on the resolution, and as
serting that the administration should
have dispatched a war vessel to. Cuba

Denver, May 20. Senator Teller ex
ploded doubt today as to whether the
Morgtia Cuban resolution will pass the

to the Cubans and favor Spanish rule.

QUICKEST ON RECORD.
San Francisco. May 20. The steam
oolljer Washtenaw came Into port to
day from Taooma after the quickest
trip between that port and San Fran
cisco on record. The Washtenaw left
here May 12 in the evening, steamed
to Tacoma, took 450 tons of coal and
arrived back here after an absence of
exactly seven days and fifteen hours.
AN ARMISTICE EFFECTED.
Athens. May 20. An armtetlc be
