Springfield. III., May 7. Al. Hamilton,
publisher of the West Chicago Journal,
clerk of the house committee on live
stock and dairying, stated to a repre
sentative of the press today that he had
been mistaken for Representative Flan
ntgan by a lobbyist for the Humphrey
bilta and was offered J2.000 to vote fir
them. The Humphrey bills extend the
franchises of street railways In Illinois
fifty years, give the control of the ex
ulting roa. la and new franchises to
specially appointed commissions instead
of boards of aldermen of the various
eittes. The bills have been bitterly
opposed by the civic reform organiza
tions of Chicago.
ALASKA NEWS.
Port Towneend, ay 7. The steamer
Mexico, from Alaska, arrived this af
ternoon with a doxen passengers. The
crowd of stranded inin Is still In Juneau
with no prospect of getting back.
Many petitions are being sent from
Alaska to Washington relative to the
appointment of governor. Mbisonaries
and the religious element demand the
appointment of John G. Brady, a lum
berman and mill owner of Sitka, while

is favorable to C. S. Johnson, of Ju
neau. Both elements agree in demand

tional Bank, despite the protests of the
bank's officers, who claim that the de
positors will be paid tn full. The Wo

It Is impossible to obtain Information
in regard to the assets and Uabillt'.e
at this time from Examiner Clary, or
any of the officials of the bank. They
absolutely refuse to give the figure.'.

of the Southern Pacific Company ar.d

morrow: Nearly all will be astonished to learn
that the actual sales of April by the
leading house in each line of business
m the cities east of the Rockies aver
age only about 10 per wot less than la
April. 182, the year of the largest bus
iness hitherto, and were $.2 per cent
more than In the same month last
year.
While speculative business In nearly
all lanes is small and does not swell
the clearing' house returns as in pre
vious years, the volume of tegtUmats
trade showa no corresponding decrease,
and this fact is one of the highest Im
portance in all business calculations.
Moreover, the returns of failures for
April show a decrease in number,
amount and average of liabilities in

today and J. N. G. Stockton, a Jack
sonville banker and supporter of Call,
was placed tn nomination. The result
of the ballot -was: Chlpley 37, Stock
ton 33, Ralney 20. Hocker 3, Burford 1.
Chipley's friends drove Call from the
race and hope soon to elect Chlpley.
BALD AND COOPER.
Lousvllle. May 7. Eddie Bald to
day deposited S500 to bind a match race
with Tom Cooper, to take place at any
time between July 1 and August 1. Bald
says he to very anxious to meet Cooper
and is tired of talking. Cooper has
taken no steps toward covering Bald's
money. His friends say that he will
accept.
