"A PERPLEXING SITUATION" lid Tint ' Rascal Nt" Held a Large Asdi- eact at risker's Cood .la sic aid Beaa tllal "Livisg fa-tares." All Astoria turned out last night to enjoy the entertainment given by lo cal talent for the benefit of the public library. The 400 filled FUhefs Opera House comfortably and the audience waa one of the moat fashionable ones which ever gathered in that auditor ium. The cause was a good one, but aside from that waa the attraction of Astoria's beat talent In music and drama. It was evidently an up-to-date audi ence, as the ladles did not wear their hats) and the gentlemen remained In the bouse between the acts. Let DO one say Astoria Is a backweod web foot town. To glance over the audi ence was a pleasure, and everyone had a good view of the stage from any part of the house. The entertainment commenced with that laughable , farce. "A Perplexing Situation," In which the Misses Sayre, Nellie Nlckerson, Garner, Tallant, Reed, Holden and McKean, and the Messrs. Carruthers, Thornton, Dr. Bur nett, Belcher, Dr. Finch and Dune a Stuart took part. It was a lively pre sentation from start to finish, and alt played their parts well. Stuart and Belcher kept the audience in a roar throughout the play and would do creditably as comedians anywhere. A series of "living pictures" were presented by the Missies Wood, Stock ton, Upshur, Fox, Nlcols, Jewett, Han son. Nlckerson, Holden and Trenchard. and tne Mjwts. Burnett and Carruth ers, which were so like the originals thai: the audience encored csain and again. The "Vision of Joan of Arc brought out special commendation, and was voted by many as the beat of the series. Mfr-s Pearl Holden, whose sweet con tralto voice is always welcomed In any entertainment, won an encore upon her solo, and Mrs. F. J. Taylor, In the beautiful solo "Asthore" won another recall. Mrs. Lyman Kinney and Miss Folsom rendered a fine duet on guitar and banjo and were obliged to respond to an encore. "That Rascal Pat," by Misses Mc Kean and Reed ajd Messrs. Terry Mc Kean (Pat), Carruthers and Tee closed the evening's program. The charac ters were all well sustained and Pat himself, by his funny efforts to keep out of trouble, made one of the hits of the evening. Miss Gene Lewds presided at the pi ano and did much to round out the enjoyable eimertalnment, which netted the library $125. ATHENS INTENSELY EXCITED. Athens, April 23.
