In spite of the denials from Europe that the war now in progress between Greece and Turkey is likely to Involve any of the great power who tried to prevent it, when the situation is stud ted It la easy to see that it must arouse the gravest apprehensions on the part of every leading nation in Europe. The very fact that the intercession, and even threats, with a corresponding dls- i wee, attempted on tfce part of the powers, did not suffice to stay the opening of hostilities between the two belligereats, shows how little in fluence the powers, under their present Jealousies and strained relations with wacn oiner, are capable of exercising to avert consequences which may in volve nearly the whole of Europe. It Is not to be believed that Christian countries like England, Germany, Italy and Russia have any sympathy with Turkey, and yet it is due to them that Turkish authority has so long been up. held over the Christian people of va rtous sections of the so-called Ottoman Empire. The powers all knw that Turkish Influence In Europe Is as an omaious as was African slavery in this country; and yet, after many compro mise and truces had beeen attempted to uphold slavery, the time came when the storm of uprising sentiment could be restrained no longer, and Us result for a time was something terrible In human annals. And so it must be with the Turk In Europe. He ought long ago to have been driven out. He Is not only not in sympathy with European civilisation, but his religion teaohei him actually to despise It. Yet the great powers of Europe have not only tolerated him, but supported him en- oouragea mm to keep his place. The day of reckoning has probably now oame, and he ,wHl have to be dealt with to the extent, maybe, of his com plete extirpation. The reason for all this tolerance of Turkish rule in Eu rope has been the fear of a general religious uprising by the followers cf Mohammed in Europe. Aia and Afri ca. Nearly one-half the totai Inhabit ants of Europe are of the ::jhamme dan religion, and there are at least 12, 000.000 of them in Asia. The British empire would have to deal with no; k than fiuOOfllVHI lr,hamr,,.l!,.,., :i '. seived the purpose of their master, the j fun slze lai-pep than those yr sultan, to call them to arms. Itufs.alof it and France are al.o menaced by the j amm uuiie specter of Mu-iem u;r.sin-. Some of these nations have already ex;erlenoed the effects of the blind j fatalism which impels these fanatk-s to dwds of dt wps-rati-m in time of war fare, and it is no wonder they shrink from the oonsequen of a g"nerai re ligious outbreak. The war betwe-n Gru-ce and Turkey is a religious war fare. That Is the precise Issue between tbem. The Greeks are said t' ije car rying their religious symbols into the ounfliet with them, and the frenzied fighting which has already been re ported Is but a slight foretaste of what will inevitably take place when the re inforcements now rushing from nearly every quarter of ithe globe reac-n the contending: amnies. Europe Is Indeed living over an earthquake, and no phi losopher, statesman or scholar Is wise enough to predlut what developments may take place In the old world's his tory within the next few days or weeks.
