THE NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
The old democratic party is st an
end. frays the Standard-Union. TSe
proofing of the Chicago convention
test y?ar aettle-J the fact, whhh had
oeen hovering In the air for s me
years, that the old-f&ahioned democ
racy were done for. No longer could
they soli into office under Grover Cleve
land with the Confederate tariff plank,
interpreted -by British precedents In
colonial .time with a mor-ey plank
pure gold on one side and pure silve
on the other, mingled as one in a sys
tem of subtle punctuation. The truth
ha, to be told, and it burs: the eggFhell
with a crack and crash and whit, as If
a bomb 'had broken Into full bloom
The old democratic party had been
whipped out on the tariff question
two years in succession, when there
was no dispute as to the Issue, and
there was a new departure at Chicago
consisting chiefly in confessing rhe
truth and formulating it on the money
matters the mildest form of demo
cratic opinion being- that we must ac
oept the stiver standard of money in
the name of free silver, and obliterate
our credit. Of course this was and Is
a vast scheme of repudiation and spo
liation, and means war upon national
honor, privet? capital and our firm of
governveiM. Thoe at the head of It
know that this program is revolution
ary, and they are for It for th? revo
lution that is in it an! that is the
democratic party. When it is well
shaken on this subject the fact will
be demonstrated by the visible affinity
of the particles that the demx-ratlc
party is an organized' revolution in the
anarchical sense, and that it is going
deliberately into the bottomless pit.
Altg-eld and Bryan last year, finding
Chemeelves 'beaten on the mere silver
ftwlidhness that is to say, AJtjeld
knew It clearly, and Bryan saw it ac
cording to his dimmer faculties came
East, invading the enemy's country,
to arouse class and sectlmal animosi
ties, clai-i pa.ws.10n9 iMpwlc'.ly. They
are now the bosses of the party anij
an? at it again, and think they are
bound to win next time.
There has been a g"-joJ deal of cu
riosity about Mr. Bryan's pe..-ch at the
Jefferson banquet in Washington. He
ana tlie puts: of honor and spoke to
the toast of the evening. He had ben
ithaseJ ab.ut by d.cile J.-::: ;c.at;-j - n.
grenmen for some time, a he llittei
through Washington and Muttered here
and there over the South, and the din
ner was witness of ths formal reevgni-
ljn of his leadership. This, it is plain,
is no longer contestel, and he is per
sonally convinced and pro-lamatory
the nwKts of the I'nltoi Stares b a
ttve nwlstanoe.
"If piu doubt the permanency of the
Chicago platform as a arty crved go
among the rank and file of th party
and measure the seal iwid enthusiasm
which that platform has aroused, and
you will realise the Impossibility of
taking a backward sftcp."
ThM are words of tnuh. and the
good cttlxens who want to ca'l them
selves di'moonxts should mentor sc
them. The donivvrncy of New Yoik
we incut the whole state houM vn
dcr this utterance. Tt Is authoritative.
If they are- not for the silver fraud,
with a paper swindle on top of it. n:id
If they are not for the spoliation of the
so-called capitalistic suites, for e:as
legislation of the meaning sort, on
t rived by theorist of misoluef they
are not de.-ii.vrats. according to the
loader. The mugwumps of rhs r-gion
should take notice of these facts. T!
miwti from Washington sh w that the
'"high" tariff hill, as Allison and Aldrich
will amend It In the senate, will ho a
law In & few weeks. There will he
democratic votes for It; one from Lou
isiana, on account of the prote tsvn of
sug-ar; and iow fnmt S.iuth raketa.
There Is no longvr a question of this,
and It will put the tariff out of polities.
It was impccaihle to gw along without
repealing the yertldious, fvlih. inco
herent Wilson-Oomian law. It was a
monumental calamity. The new law
will stay, and the new democracy will
be for the adoption of the money if
