October IS. ISM. One of the most beautiful and affect ing scenes of the great fight yesterday most have been the appearance of Mrs. Fltxsrmmons Just after her noble husband had delivered the final knock out blow to the unfortunate Mr. Cor hett The only parallel we know of for such an exhibition of womanly pride and devotion was the appearance f the venerable mother and Invalid wife of a Mr. McKInley. at a recent public function In which that obscure gentleman cut some figure at Wash ington. The question of who is en titled to be called the first lady of the land ought not now to be difficult to answer. The Police Gazette and San Pranctsco Examiner will surely settle all doubt on that score in their next Illustrated issues. ly all resorted to the bounty system of developing the beet sugar Industry. but are nearly all heavy exporters of sugar. It follows that a different eco nomic question Is presented In this country, and one that must be regarded from a different standpoint. The sugar plnnters In the British colonies which are compelled to compete with the bounty-covered product of the conti nental countries are already clamoring for a tariff on beot sugar enterlnc the I'nlted Klngl.m equal to the bounty paid on it In the laud of production. This protection which Is demanded by the sugar planters of the Hrltlsh colonies against the product of coun tries that pay bounties presents a pr.ibleni which hits Its parallel in this country, and lias been prompt y met by the ways and means committee. Although the new tariff iay cause trilling advance In the prl.-e of sus:r lo tin- coiisumer. it will doubtless give impetus to tho beet sucar Industrv of thU country, which tmay bo sM to he in Its experimental stages. So far the state of California has out ranked all other states in the suscep tlblllty of its soil to beet sugar pro duction, but It is believed that under ;he stimulus ,f adequate proectlon the Industry can be established with profit In other states. The total production of beet sugar In California fvr the three years ISM. 1SS3 and ISM was 65. P.6:o pounds. In Nebraska the 'pro duction for the same period was I tSt.SOO pounds. In all future legislation affecting the sugar Industry congress should keep steadlty In view the possibility of such development of beet sugar as to result In the production of all the raw mate rial needed for sugar manufacture In the United States. Mr. -Smith, a correspondent of the San Francisco Chronicle, writing to Ms paper from Carson City last Sun day, expressed the opinion that "If the people who object so bitterly to 'pu gilism' could see for themselves the advantages of training for a battle, they would reserve their criticism." Some idea of the particular benefits f these advantages, as well as the refining and elevating effects of such spectacles, can perhaps be gained from the following pen picture in the Asso ciated Press account this morning: "Corbet t was more unconscious from "pain than from the force of the blow. "As he lay writhing and groveling up "on the floor, his face presented the "most ghastly appearance imaginable. "No man in his last death struggle "could have horrified his spectators "more, and his agonizing cries of pain "could be heard above the cheers of "the victor." Whist classes are as much an educa tional feature of polite society as those devoted to literature or language. Many homes in the city are never without It. Chas. Rogers. FREE TO EVERY MAN THE METHODS OF A GREAT TREATMENT FOR WEAKNESS OF MEN. Which Cured Him ..iter Everything Else Failed. Chain bracelets set with Jewels are considered very elegant Easter gifts. There are three things which will come to pass at the hands of the new administration, and that as promptly aa can be done. The first Is, the en actment of revenue legislation through a protective tariff bill which shall give the government enough money for Its needs. The second is. the parly ap pointment of members of a monetary conference which. It Is hoped, may lead to a settlement of the sliver question and cure our currency disorders. The Uuni is the natural arid logical sequence of the two others a return to business activity and natlinal prosperity through the settlement of these vexed ajuestfrms. What the country nee Is more than anything else Is a rest frm the vexatious discussion of these mat ters. In many sections of the West, aurlng the campaign last sumrr.er, men practically abandoned their business and dally avueations to attend meet ings, and to discuss pro and con th? silver question. All will remember, for instance, that It was reported from Nebraska that the farmers In many Bounties abandoned work In their fiebls Co devote themselves to discussing the currency Issue. The country would be much better if every man would devote himself assiduously to his business or his work, anil allow the new admin rstratlon to have a chance to solve thp problems confronting it. The con gressional elections do not come until the fall of 1s!iK. There is nothing to be gained to anyone by political agi tation until that, campaign opens, which will be over a year hence. Meanwhile, give the country a ret from political turmoil during that time! More de votion' to business, and less to raising the devil of demagogy. The forecast of the sugar schedule to be reported In the new tariff bill nat urally attracts public atention to th remarkable growth of the beet sugar industry In this country and its possi bilities under the favorable legislation proposed. In considering the policy of the government with reference to the sugar Industry', the Chicago Times Herald says it must be kept in mind that this country docs not export sugar to any great extent, being able to sup ply only a small percentage of the domestic consumption. During the fiscal year of 189 the United States imported 1834,843.605 pounds of cane sugar val ued at 111 I.07S.M0. and 510.350,276 pounds of beet sugar, valued at J13.793.041. If rea sonable care Is used, however, and Chamberlain's Cough Remedy taken, all danger will be avoided. Among the tens of thousands who have used this remedy for la grippe, we have yet to learn of a single case having resulted In pneumonia, which shows conclusive ly that this remedy Is a certain pre ventive of that dread disease. Painful diseases are bad enough, but when a man is slowly wasting away with nervous weakness, the mental forebodings are ten times worse than the most severe pain. There is no let up to the mental suffering day or night. Sleep is almost Impossible, and under such a strain men are scarcely respon sible for what they do. For years the writer rolled and tossed on the troubled sea of sexual weakness until It was a question whether he had not better take a dose of poison and thus end all his troubles. But providential Inspira tion came to his aid In the shape of a combination of medicines that not only completely restored the general health, but enlarged his weak, emaciated parts to natural size and vigor, and he now declares that any man who will take the trouble to send his name and ad dress may have the method of this won derful treatment free. Now when say free I mean absolutely without cost because I want every weakened man to get the benefit of my experience. I am not a philanthropist, nor do pose as an enthusiast, but there are thousands of men suffering the mental tortures of weakened manhood who would be cured at once could they but get such a remedy as the one that cured me. Do not try to study out how I can afford to pay the few postage stamps necessary to mall the informa tion, but send for It, and learn that there are a few things on earth that al though they cost nothing to get they are worth a fortune to some men and mean a lifetime of happiness to most ot ua Write to Thomas Slater, Box 38, Kalamazoo, Mich., and the information will be mailed In a plain, sealed en velope.
