A visiting stranger in the city yes
terday suggested that now a spit ordl
nanc ha1 been passed by the city coun
cil, it would be In order for the mer
chants to clean up the streets in front
of their business houses, which, with
little more patching of broken road
ways oy tne street superintendent or
property-owners, would make the city
much more attractive to visitors. The
next thing In order, he thought, would
be the tearing down of the Chinese
shacks on the only solid street In the
business part of town, and the t-rectlon
there of atone buildings
The light house tender Manzanita, It
is expected, will soon undergo exten
ive re-paira m Astoria. The official
confirmation of the contract with the
Astoria Iron Works has not yet been
received fronn Washington, but It Is ex
pected soon. This will be the largest
Job of the kind ever undertaken In
Astoria. About one hunderd men will
be engaged upon the work, which will
cost the government nearly ?20,000. Th
only remodeling to be done Is in the
captain's cabin, which will be widened
some two feet. All on board the Man
zajiita are much pleased at the pros
pect of the work being done In Astoria,
for the most of the men live here, and
will thus be able to be with thtir fam
ines for quite a vacation. The first
thing Astorians know, big iron-clads
will be constructed at this port.

Through misunderstanding an error

of the funeral of the late Mrs. Laura
