Abundance of effort haa been made by th owners of real estate in Astoria to secure iu railroad connection with Portland and the East and their dona tions in this behalf have been exceed ingly liberal and deserving of the high cat praise. It to to be borne In mind, however, that railroad communication alone or the enhanoement of the value r Ml estate alone, expectant upon the completion of the railroad construe- j tton. constitute but a limited factor In I aiding the city's real advance and prosperity: for the railroad la but one means of communication, and will have the power to add to or greatly dimin tah the business of the city. Experi ence has shown that the owners of large bodies of real etftaUs are frequent ly Inimical to the Interests of producers, manufacturer and merchants, and the complaint haa often been made that the. monopoly of real estate holdings haa constituted the greatest drawback to the development of a town or coun try. What Astoria needs, to be perma nently prosperous. Is that It shall make itself the depot or emporium for trade for its surrounding country, so that It may be able to supply, at reasonable cost, the merchandise and other neces sities required by outlying towns, vil lages and the adjacent population; and the cost and quality of such supplies should be so regulated that it would not be to the advantage of consumers to deal elsewhere. At the bottom of this mercantile prosperity lies the mat ter of transportation for the customer, whereby he may reach his market and carry away his purchases, without hav ing to add to the cost of his purchas-4 the amount necessary to his transpor tation backward and forward, and thus make it to his advantage to go to or send to Portland or San Francisco once or twice or more a year, as many hundreds of settlers In this section of Oregon are doing now. "Get the customer mere, even at the cost of his transportation," should be the motto of Astoria merchants, and every other reasonable Inducement should be of fered to bring the population of the surrounding country to Astoria to deal. lot us take a common sense view of the situation. The merchants of As toria subscribe each year for a regatta, which brings to the city a great num ber of visitors. They come from Ilwa o, Cathlamet. Skamokawa, Broukfield Clifton, OIney, Gray's River, the Lewis and Clark, Westport, Knappa, Knapp ton and numerous other Industrial points and settlements. All these lo calities have small stores, supplying the retail trade of their people, but If transportation were cheap there can be no doubt that these people would prefer to come to Astoria to buy their goods. The trade of these places natu rally belongs here; w hy not reach out and get It, without waiting for.lt to drift In? The contributions of Astoria mnroftants to the annual regatta, last ing only four or five days at the far thest, amounts to a sum of thirty-five hundred or four thousand dollars. What more practical mode to Increase their business' could be adopted than for them to subscribe an equal sum a yearly subscription to be collected In monthly Installments, say of five dol lars each, to be devoted, under gultalbe safeguaj-ds, to the purpose of bringing customers to Astoria to trade? Such a sum could be most profitably expend ed in furnishing transportation at re duced rates to the people of the sur rounding country who might thus be induced to come here with their trade. There can be no doubt that this money would be amply repaid by the Increase of business in all lines of trade, and such a plan would tend to estab lish and maintain Astoria as the depot of supplies for this whole section of the state. It Is to be hoped that our merchants will consider this sugges tion, and that a movement may be started to put lit Into practical opera tion at as early a date as is possible. If the friend of the Nicaragua bill had been as active In building the ca nal aa they have been In trying to get government aid the canal wxuld be open Air business today. There are a great many of the un fortunate ones In this world, greater In number than those who are blessed with good dlegsUon. To some people the greatest misfortune Is not to be able to eat everything set before them. "I suffered for years with Dyspepsia, and everything I ate disagreed with me. I was mauceu at irj --uiuiivii Liver Regulator and was cured. I now eat everything." M. Bright. Madison Parish, La. Touching the fiery remarks of Sir Mi chael Hisks-Beaoh. "For five wewk I lived on cold water, so to spoak," writes a man who had suffered terribly from Ingestion. He could hardly keep anything on his stomach. What stayed, wasn't proixTly digested and gave him terrible pangs. Tnis is not an uncommon case. Dys peptics don't get enough nourishment They are g-tu.-ral!y thin and w eak. The ymay eat enough, but they don't digest enough. Much of what they eat turns to poison. If this keis on there's no telling what disease they may get next.
