A GOOD LETTER
In the agricultural department at
Washington there (a said to hung a map
upon which a aclenUst connected with
the department haa marked certain lo
calities in this country favorable to the
cultivation of the sugar beet. Three
of these localities are marked as pre
' eminently adapted to the cultivation of
this valuable crop, and one of tnese
thrje especially named localities 1
Clatsop county, Oregon.
Tlie arguments of the papers of Hon
olulu that the objections to the annex
ation to the United States of the Sand
wich Islands are principally based on
the assertions made that the com peti
tion of Hawaiian sugar would run our
own cane and beet sugars out of the
market. These figures given by the
Honolulu Bulletin, taken from WiUett
& Gray, would een to refute uch an
idea,: "During the past fifteen years
the consumption of sugar In the United
States has grown from 993,532 toils in
18S1 to 2,000.000 tons in 18. a an aver
age rate of increas per annum of about
six per cent. There are very good rea
sons for estimating that in (the next
fifteen years the consumption will again
double itself and become at least 4.000..
00 tons." The increase of the popula
tion of the United States in the past
twenty years has not averaged more
than one-half of the before-stated in
crease of sugar consumption in this
country.

The island of Crete, toward which the
eyes of the world are now turned with
an expectancy not unmixed with anxie
ty, has, since its conquest by the Turks
In 1669. presented a political inspect net
unlike that of the island In which Amer
icans feel so intense an interest. Crete
Is essentially Greek in all that pertains
to nationality. The mythology of Greece
is the mythology of Crete. Thirteen
hundred years before the Christian era
it Is represented by the Greek poets and
historians as having buen governed by
its own kings, among whom were Sat
urn, Jupiter and Minos. Crete was first
conquered by'flhe Romans under Metel
lus. In 182.1 A. D. it was conquered by
the Sartxens, who founded the city of
Candia on the ruin of Herat-lea. After
that the Christians got hold of it, and
It was a poein of Venice when the
Turks undertook its conquest In 1645,
which they accomplisiied after a war
of twenty-four years, and Crete has
since been a Turkish province.
The Cretans never have b-.-en satiated
with Turkish rule. Bind have repeatedly
risen in revolt. At the lierlin congress
in 1878 the jxirte promised reforms
which he has never carried out.
The toul populaiion of the bland now
numbers about 200,009, about 70.000 of
whom are Turks, if Homer may be
credited, Crete nr.e had
but there are now only three principal
towns Candia, IletiHV) and Can'-a. The
population numbers lsw than half
what it was at the outbreak of the
Greek 'revoiutiim In 1821.
Notwithstanding the ado which the
so-called powers of Europe are mak
ing over the aotion of Greece In succor
ing the Christians of Crete, who are
their own kindred and speak their own
language, it Is not probable that any of
them would, under nlmilar circum
stances, act differently. For nlt,'h u;n
two thousand years Europe has been
Irttormitteiutly eniregeI in wars which
meant almost nothing for the cause of
humanity. Wood has been poured like
wartor at the Whim of despots; each
creed, as h arose, had Its advent nignal
Ized by a carnival of death; there have
been "wars of conquest and wars of re
pression, religious and political wars,
and ware for tJhe pure pomp and cir
cumstance of the art, but there has
probably been no war in Which the
cause of humanity that and nothing
else was the point involved.
For years, now, the so-called powers
of Europe have besn qulesoent not
fighting, though potentially able to do
each othur more damage than ever be
fore. Peace, In this case, is the victory
of dlpl'nacy. Tet an Insult to the dig
nity of the kaiser might be assuaged
only by vfelting ithe mtofries of war
upon fcalf ft dozen nations.
But there are crimes greater than
tlwit of war, and the powerful nations of
Europe were never guilty of a greater
crime than thftt involved in thr oiris
sion to give inntant and adequate relief
to the Christian people of Armenia In

The regular, undoubtedly. The Irregu

Bitters will soon remedy this want In
