WHY SHOULD FRIENDS

UIS-
The recent sharp attacks by the lead
ing ipaper of the state, the Portland
Oreijonlan, upon Astxria, and its har
bor, has called forth considerable ad
verse criticism amongst ithe imople of
tills county, as well as the people at
large. What reason Is there for quar
reling Ixntween friends and members of
the same family Oregonlan? All of
the people of Oregon are equally Inter
ested In seeing the state reach Its full
est development, and the immigration
here of people who will aid ln the up
building of the great commonwealth.
We want farmers, mechanics, mill
hands ami all kinds of skilled labor.
Every part of the state Is bidding for
population. For months past the
Chamber of Commerce of Portland, the
Oregonian, the Immigration Board and
its newspaper, have been calling upon
the people of the state to do all ln their
power to Induce Immigration; have call
ed upon every city and town in the
state to help out in the 'movement ln
both a moral and substantia1 way, and
have begged the newspapers of the
state to boom 'the entire proiosItion.
This is all very well, and the communi
ties and papers of the state have re
