Word received In Portland yesterday from the East, states that Mr. A. B. Hammond, president of the Astoria and Columbia River Railroad, yesterday started from New York for Astoria. He will probably start en route at his hlme In Missoula, and arrive on the coast about January 11 The presence of Mr. Hammond ail! doubtless mean the more active prosecution of work on the railroad and the beginning of work on collateral enterprises. When seen last evening Mr. Curtis said he expected Mr. Hammond here In a few days. Captain Ingram, who Is in charge of the work of floating the Potrlmpos, wss In the city yesterday and said that had not the crew refused duty a few days ago they would have been able to get the ship off the sands. Captain Hell wege. who has been In the hospital for a number of day a has been ordered home on account of his 111 health, and First Officer Hlrsch has been placed in charge of the ship. The funeral of the late Mrs. Timmons was held yesterday afternoon from the residence. Rev. J. J. Walter conducted the services at the house and at Green wood Cemetery. The steamer May- flower conveyed the funeral party from the cMy at 1 o'clock, and Just as It ar rived at the burying ground the storm ceased and a most affecting service took place. Despite the incessant storms of the past weeks, the ground was found dry, and no one suffered in convenience. Mrs. Ttmmona was a no ble woman, well known by all old As- toriana, and her death has caused much sorrow. The two white horses of the Engine Company No. 2, must take a back seat They have done noble work for nine years In the department and are now sixteen years old. Their age is too great however, and their Inability to meet the requirements of the depart ment was fully demonstrated on New Year's Day when they attempted to make the run up the lath street hill to the old water works. Those who are conversant with fire department mat ters are thoroughly convinced that the application made to the city council, and which will be considered at to night's meeting, by the engine company for a new team, should be granted. The che.n leal engine should be the first one to reach afire In any city. THE MASQUE BALL. Herman Wise's masquerade ball last night was largely attended and a most enjoyable affair. Between fifty and six ty couples were on the floor. An or chestra comprised of members of the Astoria Mllitar Band was in attend ance and discoursed excellent music. The first gentleman's prize, a fine hat, went to Mr. Joseph Cast ion, and Miss Laura Kingston, a charming young la dy, was awarded the prize one-half dozen silk handkerchiefs for the best sustained lady's character.
