At the last meeting, held December S3, IS?, of the Society Miner va, a committee of three was appointed to draft suitable resolutions of coitdem. nation against the proa, that would print derogatory matters reflecting on any class of the American citizens, with the full and unanimous Instruction to direct such resolutions particularly to and agnlnst the Budget of recent dute. Now, therefore, the committee, with the authority vested hi It by wild society, find and resolve as follow: First The article published recently In the lhidgct as an editorial, "The nineteenth century will close." etc., a copy of which Is hereto apcndcd and made a pnrl hereof, was untimely, un called for. and Indicated In the highest .legrce a feeling of animosity against ortaln foreign-born litltens of this country- Second We fully endorse the senti ments expressed by one "Scandinavia," In the Astortan of the ISth Inst, and reiterate his remark !y asking to hsve tlH mini' republished In full. Third The memlwr of the Society Minerva In order to be qualified for membership, must either le of Svandl navhui birth or born of Scandinavian parents, not forgetting, however, theul- lleglamv due their adopted country, and they, like the sirtt mujoiliy of Hcandl-navlan-Nrn cltucns, feel tlutt when a newspaper puts thetn In the same clans with undesirable InimiKiiiut Hmt an lujtistlct has been dene to them and their ancestors, of which they are proud; If the editor of the Itudgvt I ttouM nn . uJy .h .,,..- of navlan race than for his Knickerbock ers and other pet. There will be fighting bliss, scholarly bliHid.ommcnial, agricultural and artistic blissi, and from the ming ling and chemical combining of It all will spring the handsomest and most gifted race on the globe. We are not vain, but we really fi-vl sure of this. Even Scandinavians, ivies, Hungarians and Italians will have their share In producing the perfect American nice. We do not want tis many of the last- named peoples, however, and the gov ernment Is wise to restrict immigra tion." It seems very strange to me how It ran be possible for that paper, which during many months past has posed a,s the frU nd anil ofllclal organ of the fishermen, who, In Astoria, are largely Scandinavians, Russians and Italians, to Justify Itself In milking such an ed itorial statement as the one alsive. I belisig to the Snllnavlan nice my self, and belk-ve that as a tuition we are Just as gissl as any, and on n high a plane of civilization. We have our faults and our bad men, but the Infer ence conveyed In the sentence, "Even Scandlanvians. Rules," etc., will have their shore In pnsluclng the perfect American race, seems to me to be In sulting In Its tone, and I, for one, take exception to It. Have not the Scan dinavians already done their share to wards perfecting the American race, or the people of the United States, and have not those of our nation who have thrown In their lot in this country proved to be good citizens, honest and Industrious, and have they not In many states, like Minnesota and Oregon, taken their part In the law-making machinery of the country, with credit In themselves and the districts they represented? I admit that the United States, nor any other country, for that matter, wants to receive the off-scourlngs and criminal classes of other nations, and Just laws to prevent such Immigration should be enacted.
