A LEHHON FHOM AFRICA. Sometime valuable Information about ourselves comes from unexpected sources. A leading organ of the Meth odist Church contributes the following note, about American baking powder all the way from Africa. Itev. Bishop William Taylor, for sev eral year Methodist bishop of Africa, says the red label of the Royal Baking Powder, ao familiar to every house keeper In America, Is quite aa well known and the powder aa highly priced In every part of the continent to which civilisation haa extended. The Royal Making Powder waa taken to South Africa a great many years ago by Mrs. Robinson, a missionary. But Its use soon spread beyond the missions, and It came to be regarded as a neceaxlty by all clause. It waa found particularly valuable In the mlnea and upon the ranches; and frequently sold at Interior stations at a dollar a pound. Another Interesting statement Is that no other baking powder will atand ser vice In that country. Rev. Roaa Taylor, the agent for African Missions, says: "During the past ten years we have hipped Royal Baking Powder regular ly to our African Missions, and for the laat four years to tbe exclusion of all other brands, because of the testimony of our missionaries that It maintains Ita strength, freshneaa, and purity In the tropical climate, which other do not. For Instance, th superintendent of our mission In Africa, a work that la financially maintained on commercial lines, reported that he could not hold his trade with anything else but the Royal. We are using it in forty m le sion atatlona in Africa." Thla natural test demonstrates more forcibly than a chemical analysis could the wide dtflerence that exists between the different baking powders In their combination and actual practice value. Tbe maintenance of Its strength and freshness under all climatic conditions Is evidence that the Royal Powder Is more accurately made and composed of purer and better Ingredients. Such a powder only wilt give uniform results In perfect foods and prove of the great est economy In the saving of flour, but ter and other articles used In their pro duction. GRAIN BLOCKADE AT BALTIMORE Not for many years has there been auch a grain blockade at this port as that which Is now taxing the great ele vator and extensive freight yards of the Baltimore and Ohio and the Penn sylvania Railroads on both sides of the harbor. One hundred land twelve large ocean steamers are now under charter to come here from British and Conti nental European porta to load cereals. At the Baltimore and Ohio terminals and Locust Point nearly three thousand cars belonging to a dosen or more west ern roads are on the sidings awaiting their turn to deliver grain. The eleva tor are taxed to their utmost capacity. Ships are being rushed under the eleva tor chutes In quirk succession. Six steamers have been loaded during the twenty-four hour just passed at the Pennsylvania elevators alone. The Asa- lea, William Annlng and Wlldcroft lnadd 3S3.000 bushels, and the Montana Dago and Fern ml ale took part cargoes aggregating 104,000 bushels. In Icps than two hours 42,000 bushels were poured Into the Montana. The blockade Is a serious matter, as the cars are needed In the West and should be on their way back there in stead of resting on sidings here. The Pennsylvania elevators are being re- llc-i by warehousing grain In six bar-rea. Other barges are on the way hero from New York and Philadelphia and will be converted into floating warehouses as soon as they arrive. More than a thousand extra men have been put to work In the yards, and the Immense force Is now kept busy day and night making room for thousands of more cars on the way from the West. Twenty or more grain ships are due this week and next and they will be loaded with the quickest dispatch. Bal timore Dispatch. OASTOllIA.
