didn't do any good as he had to stay
there until the truck was repaired.

Gold Is not only doming out of Its

Over the p.oepects of that country and
predicts for It one of the most remark
able eras of prosperity ever known In
this country, even in the palmy days
of '40 in California. Talking over the
question of gold mining, Mr. Pontius
Said to an Astorlan representative last
evening:
"Tes, t am interested In gold mining
and here Is a piece of quarts w hich I
hav just brought with me from Trail
Creek, hawing dug It with my own
hands in the mine J am Interested In,
together with two of your well known
cltixens. about six miles from Kossland,
the principal town of the Trail Creek i
region, lying In West Kootenai. Ross
land is 131 miles north of Spokane and
has now about six thousand people. In
a year or two more it will be a second
Cripple Creek. This whole country,
which as you know Is on the Upper
Columbia river, Is very rich In minerals
and particularly In gold quarts. The
formation Is of A peculiar volcanic na
ture, and the greater part of the quarts
is base, or smelting ore. Our mine, and
the O. K. are about the only free milt
ing oe producers In the region. The
quartz In this region will run from $60
to $125 per ton. There la of course more
profit In the free milling quarts, but mil
lions are being taken out now from the
mines w hich produce the smelting ores.
The LeRoy, War Eagle, And Center
Star, besides A large number of other
mines, are shipping ores now and in
fact, the railroad Is unable to carry all
the products promptly to the smelters.
The other day I saw over $600,000 worth
of ore on the dumps at the LeRoy,
awaiting shipment. Only a year or two
ago one of the principal stockholders
of the LeRoy was a poor man living In
Spokane, having lost all his property
during the hard times. He believed In
Trail Creek, however, and held on to
his stock. Today he la Immensely
wealthy. The city of Spokane is now
almost out of debt from the product of
these mines. The town Is booming.
There Isn't an empty house In It. Rents

kind of quarts along the w hole length
of It. The peculiar formation of this
whole territory haa proved In every
Instance where A mine haa been sunk
that the deeper down you go the richer
the mine becomes, showing that the ore
has been ejected from below. This min
ing territory, unlike others In Colorado
or California, la easy of set-ess, either
by railroad or by river. The country Is
not very rough, and travel either by
orseback or by team Is very comfort
able. Our company, the Acme, will
commence active operations early In the
spring, although we have now a lot of
men at work taking out ore. I am i
