Now for city politics, and them peace.
The building- of a sea wall along- our
front la one of the necessities of the
near future and the preliminary steps
eannot he taken too soon. When build
big- commences In earnest It will go
with a rush, and to make a first-class
harbor we must have a stone sea wall.
The g-enerul feeling of encouragement
throughout the city bespeaks the good
times coming In the near future. The
wise ones are trimming sail according'
Ty and preparing to meet the wave of
prosperity when it comes. Long-headed
business men are ready to meet Mr.
Hammond, or any other Eastern cap
italist, with a well developed manu
facturing proposition with a block of
the stock already subscribed. That Is
the way to make others think we be
lieve in ourselves.
The recent opening of the Cascades
locks means more to Astorlc then any
event In her history. Now fBat the
Columbia Is open from The Dalles to
Astoria the products of the fertile Hood
river country will be shipped to this
lty. With a through line of steamers
between The Dalles and here wheat
will be loaded at Oregon's only sea
port. Hereafter, Instead of eating Cal
ifornia peaches, Astorians will consume
the fruits of tha Hood River valley.
The people of The Dalles, like the peo
ple of Astoria, seem to think that Port
land has done all in her power to hold
their city back, and they will give the j
metropolis the go-by on every possible
occasion. The open river rr.eens every-
thing to Astoria, the rf-aport. ard T5ie

It must be gratifying to Major Mc-''no
Klnley to read the words of praise and
confidence expressed for him on all
(ides. In all sections of the country, and
from all the great newspapers of both
parties. No man has ever gone up
more rapidly in public estimation than
has Mr. McKinley since his nomination,
and no man has had the good fortune
to enter the presidential office through
the votes of so generally representative
a body of people as those who contrib
uted to bring about his election. He
belongs to no section, no faction, no
class, no party. He is just what every
president should be not a Republican
nor a Democratic, but Just simply
American president; called to his office
and clothed with Its power by the unan
imous voice of a larger proportion cf
the whole American people than ever
before spoke for the election of any
individual in the history of the nation,
er perhaps In the history of the world.
Mr. McKinley Is too wise and too pure
a patriot to abuse the trust thus re
posed In him by his fellow citizens,
and there is every reason to believe
that under his administration the coun
try will ent?r upon an era of harmony,
national progress and prosperity, never
dreamed of or before realized. One of
the bent tributes to McKinley yet
printed is from the New York Sun, the
paper which la at present, as It lias al
ways been, the leading Democratic pa
per of the country. The Sun says:
"The Ions seri'-s of political r.ddrfsscs
"recently delivered by Major McKinley
"were marked by one characteristic
"which, when we consider tlte jliit
"manifested in his opponent's speeches
"and In the four years of Populist
"Democracy preceding, makes Uiem
"the most gratifying and precious fea
ture of the entire canvass. In all Ma
"jor McKinley's talk there was noth-'
"Ing of the demagogue. There was not
"a touch of the lying cant about rich
"and poor with which the self-seeking
"schemers among Populist Democratic
"statesmen, from Cleveland to Bryan,
"have been for the last four years fill
"ing the Jess fortunate with hatred of
"of the prosperous, and arraying class
"against class. While Bryan on his tour
"waa apparently producing a whirl
vind of responsive enthusiasm with
"this vicious agitation Major McKinley
"maintained rigidly the attitude of a
"dignified, honorable, and patriotic
"statesman of the best school of Amer
"loan Democracy, and refused to im
"peril our political and social traditions
"for the sake of drumming up the votes
"of the iirnorant and ill-disposed. The
"fact that the candidate of honest mon
"ey stood thus firmly against the in
"flammatory spirit which ha Just cul
"mlnated In an effort for general repu
diation is perhaps the brightest star
"In Victory's crow v"
THK WITH QflTS.
Mr. Aryan's announcement that he
prnpoea to continue the agitation for
free coinage at IS to t, does not meet
with an enthusiastic response from the
South. This Is evidenced by the tone
of the Pemixralto papers In that sec
tion which supported Hryan during the
late campaign. The demand of the
loading papers Is that the stlverltr
drop the agitation.
"We look upon free silver coinage as
adcaut Issue," says the Savannah News.
"It will never be resurrected; It Is laid
In Us grave along with the greenback
lssu." As for the future course of the
Democratic party, the News "Is confi
dent the party will never adopt a plat
form like the Chicago one attain, and
we seriously question whether It will
cer lixain accept as leaders the men
ho were chletly Instrumental In mak
Ing It."
Referring to the talk about "doing
the thing over again," the Mobile Reg
ister says that "the repetition will
scarcely be seriously attempted, as
"what the people want now Is a rest
and we feel sure that when they get it.
It III be at such a price that they will
value It too greatly to permit them
selves easily to be led off Into agita
tion a second time."
The Jacksonville, Fit., Cltlsen says
that "people may talk about carrying
on the contest, but every sensible man
knows that It Is ended. The fight was
a foolish one, and to propose Its con
tinuance would be nothing short of
madness. The party must turn Its back
upon the unwise leaders who have
brought disaster upon It. It must re
turn to the safer path laid out by Its
founders. That Is the moral of the elec
tion."
And so It goes all over the South. The
Democratic papers which upheld Bryan
are all talking In the same strain. The
Bryan program Is meeting a decided
frost.
Indigestion Is often taken for con
sumption. The word consumption
means wasting away, and dyspeptics
often waste away as badly as consump
tives.
The reason people waste away Is be
cause either they don't get enough to
eat, or they don't digest what they
do eat.
If the latter is your trouble, take
Shaker Digestive Cordial. This will
help you to digest your food and stop
your loss of flesh.
Shaker Digestive Cordial is made
from herbs, barks and the juices of
fruit, by the well-known Shakers at
Mount Lebanon. It possesses great
tonic and digestive powers.
Shaker Digestive Cordial has cured
many supposed consumptives (who
were really dyspeptics), by simply help
ing- their stomachs to digest their food.
thus giving them nourishment and new
strength.
