Astoria, Or.. October IS, !. The coming election for three city aldermen promisee to be an Interesting one. From the latest advices there will , be several new candidates for the hon. rs and ail of them strong men. There are many rumors In the air concerning" the make-up of McKlnley'a cabinet, but It is not probable that gen tleman will be able to make his an nouncements before the week prior to bis Inauguration. That central market scheme has cot yet taken tangible shape, but Is doubt less going through the mill In the man ner usual to all Astoria projects. The farmers must curb their Impatience un til the full time rolls around for devel opment For the first time In many weeks do mestic exchange at Interior points has risen to a premium, and the expansion In gold, according to the statement cf the New York clearing house banks. since the election, has probably never been equaled In & similar period of time. Sixteen millions of dollars have already come Into sight in the New York banks and New York treasury, and the amount of gold carried In other banks throughout the country is prob ably an enormous sum. These facts speak louder than words of the effect f the restoration of confidence. Astoria is probably the largest town n the Pacific coast without a public park. The city is on the eve of a sub stantial growth in population and busi ness and while making plans for ether Improvements the city fathers as .veil as business men cannot do better than to include a city park in their calcula tions. Nothing so much adds to the at tractiveness and health of a city as a public breathing place, and Astoria has many beautiful sites suitable for parks which could be utilized at little expense. Many property owners would no doubt be willing to donate sufficient ground for the purpose If the city would make the improvements Parks and roads are the crying need of the city at pres ent in the way of public Improvements. The winter months could not better be used than in securing and laying out a fine public park. The reported organization of young men for the purpose of fostering the Interests of Astoria, If a fact, is a com mendable movement Nothing can rapidly aid the growth of the city as the development of the resources we have, and there can be no question but that the business of our city might be enlarged, even should It always remain a fishing village; but for the building of the railroad there would be no other hope for the future of this town, and now that there Is good ground to be Iieve in a future city here, every effort mode In the Interests of the town should be made on such lines as will promote its larger growth as well as make bi"Iness for the immediate pres ent. There Is every reason to think that before the first of the year de cisive steps will have been taken In various large enterprises which will help along the small matters and lay the foundation for the rapid enlarge ment of the city next season. New York shared with Massachusetts on election day the credit of being the first slate to use voting machines in a presidential election. The city of Rochester used seventy Myers ma chines, one In each election district, and thfi city of Worcester v.scd forty-eight McTammany machines, two in each voting precinct. Each city used the In vention of one of Its own citizens, and local pride was one of the chl--f influ ences behind tha experiments. Both machines provide a ' single knob for registering a vote for presidential elect ors; that Is to say, they are voted for In a group. The Myers machine pro vides a roll of blank paper on a cylin der, with a space exposed of sufficient tiZK In which to write a name. The voter who wishes to cast a ballot for an Individual elector can write the name thereon, and by pressing a knob can have the vote recorded for counting. The McTammany machine simply pro vides a place in which to deposit a separate ballot. Both arrangements are makeshifts, and are not satisfactory solutions of the problem; but It Is to be said that the rislit of voting for In dividual electors Is a useless one, and that no harm would be done to any one If no provision for Its exercise were made. THE PHILOSOPHY OF IT. Four years ago mills began to close the week of President Cleveland's elec tion, and others stopped taking orders and prepared to close aa soon as exist ing engagements were completed. This year many mills start up the week of McKlnley's election, and multitudes which have been running as close aa possible, so as to stop without delay In case of Hryan's success, begin Immedi ately to run full force. Four years ago the reduction of wages began as soon as the result or me election was Known. This year many concerns have already advanced wages voluntarily, even he fore the result Is precisely ascertained. Men do not yet know how large the majority of electoral votes or the popu lar majority may be. nor how the gen. ate will stand. lUit they know enough to be certain that the supremacy of law will be maintained, that the courts will not be prostituted, and that no more IVmocrntle experiments with the currency or the tariff will be possible for four years at least. It is not necessary to add comments. A naked recital of the facts must edu cate multitudes of men. The really sur prising thing is that millions of fellow. citizens have been voting to take the bread from their own mouths, to de prive their own families of subsistence, and to prostrate the industries and bus- ness of their country. This would be less strange if all of them were as base and dishonest as those who, have com posed riotous mobs In many cities, or as densely ignorant as a considerable part of the voters In the slums of cities or In the backwoods. But it la not so. A great majority of those who voted to destroy their own prosperity and that of the country were unquestion ably honest and sincere. Besides the base and vicious and the stupidly Ig norant, there was a great number of citizens who possess average Intelli gence and are honest In purpose, and yet voted as stupidly as the least wor thy of ail voters. It is easy to say that false money theories blinded many of them, and false notions about the tariff blinded many others. The explanation does not explain, until It Is realized that these false thories have a faculty of blinding men to their own real Interests and to their duties as citizens, and that be cause they appeal to low and selfish rather than patriotic motives. It Is the very essence of the cheap money theory that it persuades a man that his individual share of the general proper ty can be Increased by taking away part of the property which others en- Joy. It Is the very essence of the free trade theory that It offers to selfishness cheaper goods, without regard to the welfare of the millions who cannot produce cheap goods and yet live wholesome and happy Uvea It is opening the eyes of millions this swift transition from gloom to sun light If the Democratic vote Is neces sarily a vote for disaster and disturb ance, why cast another? If Republican success means Instant Improvement and gAieral prosperity, why not make it sure every time? If the general wel fare Inevitably brings the best results for all individuals, what sense is there in voting for changes which a narrow and blind relfishness may prompt, but which surely Involve sacrifice of the general welfare? If support of cheap money and free trade theories unavo'd- ab!y 7r.aJ.es a man the companion and helper of the ignorant and the baser elements of society. Is it not time to push patriotism forward through all the years that are coming? I know a land where the streets are paved With the things we mean to achieve; It is walled with the money we meant to have saved. And the pleasures for which we grieve; The kind words unspoken, the promises broken, And many a coveted boon. Are stowed away there in that land somewhere The land of "Pretty Soon." Ella Wheeler Wilcox. The old way of delivering messages by postboys compared with the modern telephone, Illustrates the old tedious methods of "breaking" colds compared with their almost Instantaneous cure by One Minute Cough Cure.
