Astoria, Or., October t. IS. The Rainier Review appears this week under new management. Mr. F. O. Brown having taken charge. The Review Is one of the brightest papers an the river, and the Astorlan wishes tt much success under Mr. Brown. Wheat reached the hlghwater mark yesterday. December climbing up to tfi cents, the Paris and Berlin mar kets were also higher, and Dun s re port shows a decrease In the business mure- In the United States this wevK f ten as against the failures of the acme week last year. Every Indication points to brighter times. Sovf that the election Is over, the question of most interest to thoughtful sitisens. says Bradstreefa, concerns the probable future of the free coinage movement It Is true that the move ment has been defeated for the present by the largest popular plurality, record ad In our history, but that may not pre vent the silver men from endeavoring to force the Issue upon the country In the campaign four years hence. There can be no doubt. Judging from leading members of the silver and Populist parties proper, that they at least will make this effort. Whether this same policy will be followed by the portion f the Democratic party which support ed or did not actively dissent from the Chicago platform, is the point of real Interest, for upon the continuance of this alliance between these three sec tions of the Bryan party depends the question whether the issue will demand consideration as a factor of any serious ness In our politics. Pending the de terminstion of thl? c.utl'n. it v ill be the part of wisdom for the men who have followed the standard of sound money to minimize as far as possible the points of difference between them on other questions of policy. the railroad has denied that there was any such occurrence a depleted In the reports, and his word must be gxxl. Not the least gratifying circumstance attending the election of Major McKln Icy to the presidency Is the certainty that he will take the ofllee free of obll gatlons which might affect the choice of his advisers in the discharge of his official duties. The people nominated him. The people elected him. To them only Is ho answerable. In this respect he has tho advnntagr of many of his most distinguished pre decessors. Some of our liest presidents have been handicapped by promises made by them or In their behalf cliher before or after their nomination. Major MeKlnley Is Quoted as saying: 'No man ha ever been chosen for 'president freer tnnn I shall be from ev ery kind of plods. There will be no mortgage on me when 1 enter upon my dutle or make Ui my cabinet or ileal with any personal question whatever. Obligations? Vos. I am under many obligations, but not one which 1 have to discharge at the public expense." Whether this quotation Is authentic we have no means of knowing, but It Is pot-ltively known that Ihe facts ore therein correctly stated. This personal knowledge Is supported by Mr. Uanna' declaration to the same effect. In his high character and In his un- pledged presidency lies the best assur ance of tho success of the admlnlstra tlon of Wm. MeKlnley. HIS CAREER. Chapter I. Astorlan have stopped waiting, like Mlcawber, for something to turn up, and without depending upon other peo ple's energies, will themselves start to rolling the ball cf prosperity In our midst Why should we wait for some one else to come In and plant some thing from which they will reap the benefits In the future, when we might as wen sow the seed ourselves and carry off all the plums. We have reach ed the limit of trading Jackknlves among ourselves, and yet we cannot expect foreigners to come in here ard plant money in property, unless i.e how our own faith In the proposition. Start a wheel or two moving, get even a little pay roll established In some new enterprise, and outsiders will read ily aid us to start large factories. If ur property holders are willing to take even a little stock In a big enterprise and thus show their faith In their own town, there will be plenty of Eastern capital to do the rest. During the dark months of the winter. let us be up and doing; make definite plans for factories, ftrvtte capitalists to inspect them, make them fe'r propositions, and by the time summer comes we can sell all the real estate on all the hills and vales in sight of the county courthouse. From every appearance Astorlans will this month have many reasons for royally celebrating Thanksgiving day. Notwithstanding crude reports sent out from the city, whose only object is to give our enemies an opportunity to pick flaws In the work going on in and around Astoria, the railroad project Is steadily progressing, and the latest ad vices from Portland are to the effect that a large Increase In the force of men on the railroad line will goon be made. The keenness of sensational newspapers and their careless re porters and correspondents to make something out of nothing, accounts for the enlargement which has recently appeared in several San Francisco and Portland newspapers, upon the very ordinary occurrence of a new railroad grade receiving more or less damage during the first heavy storms to which ft was subjected. This Is so common a aiafter that In California or In the vi cfnlty of Portland, the same happen ings would never have been noticed. The unwise action of the correspond ents has made some enemies In the city for certain papers and has only made an uncalled-for pretext for our ene mies to comment upon. There is not and never was the slightest basis for making a sensational news Item of so small a matter. The chief engineer of Don't sit down and wait for trade, 'Taint the way. With the American people united for protection and European nations ready to arrange for International bimetal lism, it looks as If the MeKlnley ad ministration would have plain sailing before It. Centuries ago, people used to fear what they called the pestilence. "Black Death" was the most terrible thing In the world to them. They feared It as people now fear the Cholera and Yel low Fever. And yet there Is a thing that causes more misery and more deaths than any of these . It Is so com mon that nlne-tenthB of all the sick ness In the world is traceabl? to It. It Is merely that simple, common thing constipation. It makes people listless, causes dizziness, headaches, loss of ap petite, loss of sleep, foul breath and distress after eating. The democrats declare they were beaten because of coercion, and the populists attribute the defeat to the fact that Bryan ran as a Democrat and the people would not trust him under that name. The election of MeKlnley has aroused tho hopes of European bimetalllHts, and the outlook for an International agree ment for the free coinage of silver is decidedly encouraging.
