There are not many iron ship under
tho American Hag, and aome of these
were formerly British ahlp that had
got Into trouble and were partially re
built In thl country, and so allowed
an American registry. Among the
ships so acquired are the Annie John
son. Kenllworth and May Flint, all
trading to and from San Francisco
Another Is soon to be added In the re
covery ot the British ahlp Kllbrannan
from her wrecked position at Port Wil
son, and which la now being repaired
at Tort Blakoly. It Is possible that
the British ship Glenmorag may be
hauled off the ononis at the north and
converted Into an American ahlp. The
same thing may hajipcn to the Bialr
more, which capsized In this harbor
last spring and which Is now at the
t'nlon Iron Works. The Iirltlsh bark
Gainsborough, under temporary repairs
at Honolulu, may be another prise of

SPITTING ON THE SIDEWALKS.
Astoria, Nov. 6, 18SI6.
To the Editor:
Thirteen years have passed since a
peculiar microbe was proven to be the
cause of consumption, and that microbe
Is nearly always present In the spittle
of those who have that disease.
Another Important foot is crowding
In upon us too; and that la that con
sumption Is hardly ever hereditary, but
1 caused usually somehow by the con
sumption microbes passing from one
individual to the lungs of another. And
so we now find efforts are being made
looking to the stamping out of at least
the greater port of this disease. My
own opinion Is that nine tenths of this
disease can be wiped out by a few sim
ple and Inexpensive procedures.
I will only speak of one habit we

You say you "have no consumption,
so It make no difference for yoti." 1
say, "If you have no consumption, then
set a proper example for those that
have the dlseaae."
There Is no necessity of spitting on
the sidewalk. All we have to do I to
step to the edge of th sidewalk to the
curb, and pit there where It will be
washed away.
The danger of tramping In the sputa
on the sidewalks is that we may there
by carry some of the microbe on our
feel Into our home.
And there they are dried and pulver
ized by further tramping and some
time I fear Inhaled Into our lunga with
the dust. So long a the microbes were
moist there was no danger that they
would be carried In the atmosphere.
The above thought have come to me
on noticing how common It I for us to
spit on the sidewalks In Astoria. Al
