THK FALSE FRIENDS OF LAHOK. Free trade and five silver, said Major MoKlnley, arc the false friends of la bor. "They lure with promises of cheap commodities and cheap money. T!;e partial trial of free trade has proved that the cheap commdlttos promised are don 4' to lalftr, and cheap money will be equally d.ar to them and it saerlilee to their highest and best intei-sts." In addition Major McK'nley said. Increase the purchasing power of wages and decrease the price of everything It bought and Increase the price of every thing It made." What has been the result of that Democratic policy? Instead of the country realising the benefits which the advocates of free trade Mr. Bry an among the number assured would come from the policy they were advo cating we And that It has been de structive to the Industrial Interests of the nation and damaging to the labor of the country. It Is true that we have not free trade, but the antagonism of the Democratic party to the policy of protection was sufficient to create dis trust and cause a general stoppage of the industries of the country. Every body who haa given any attention to the events of the lost four years knows that the tariff policy of the Democratic party has been damaging to the Inter ests of all the people and especially to the wageworkers and the agricultural producers. OLD FKOPLE. wish to destroy what his own party and many of Its opponents believe to be one af the most beneficent features of his own administration? At the beginning of the campaign the Republican national committee fell obliged to refuse all requests from the Pacific coast for speakers of national repute on the ground that the exigen cies of the campaign, at that time, re quired the services of every available man In the Middle Western states. There is no longer sjny doubt that the Middle Weet has been won, and the battle ground of the campaign has been shifted to this coast. This accounts for the presence In Oregon of such men as Robert P. Porter, Be nam in Butter worth, F. X Shoemaker, and Charles F. Boutelle. It Is also understood that ex-Speaker Reed has recovered his voice, and that the speeches booked for him In California will be delivered on time. There Is encouragement In all this for the Republicans of Oregon, and the fact that the eyes of the whole country will now be on the Pacific coast from this time until the 3d of Novem ber, is likely to Inaugurate a competi tion as to which state shall five the greatest proportionate majorities for McKlnley and sound money. Let the good fight go on. The Republican policy contemplates the remedy of this state of things by the opening of the mills and factories and giving a market to the idle labor of the country. It proposes to foster the industry of the nation as the first condition to prosperity. Its theory Is that the starting up of the mills is tha pre-requisite to prosperity that Indus try must precede everything else. The wisdom of this will be conceded by all practical men. No American cltlsen who understands the nee is of h:s coun try advocates free trade. Every man knows that to be Impracticable. Free silver, which means silver monometal llsra. Is no less objectionable. Bryan Ism means both and It Is therefore hos tile to American labor. In an article re cently on "Free Sliver and Labor," it said: "Surely no sane man will claim "that a buyer with a fixed limited ln "come will be benefited In an advance "in the price of all commodities, unless "the rise in prices Is attended by com "pensating circumstances. .. uat cir cumstances would serve as a compen "satloa In a case of this kind? We do not think there is a free silver newspaper in this country which has not copied this al leged opinion, British though It was, and it has been sent out In sheets by general and local committees.
