The iisreputable methods and lying
Inventions of Bryan's campaign man
agers and press representatives have
been so thoroughly ventilated and dis
credited that hardly any respectable
paper now deigns to notice the fresh
fakes and falsehoods which continue to
emanate from these sources. As the
campaign closes, however, there Is one
species of fraud in which the small fry
among the disorderly elements now
threatening the country has become so
adept, and which certain local free sil
ver organs. In their desperation over
Bryan's waning chances, are prepar
ing to carry to such flagrant and of
fensive lengths, as to require immediate
and vigorous Interference.
Know ing very well from previous ex
perience that no campaign statement
which they could print as their own
nmdurtinn would carrv anv weight or
command any attention, these papers j laRl1 aml 1r,?s'1

are now stealing the cloak or tne teie-i
graph companies under which to utter
the vilest and most preposterous ca
nards against McKlnley; and by means
of bogus and forged despatches, pur
porting to come through the reputable
agency of some press association, they
are dally dishing out to their readers
pretended developments and facts In the
campaign favorable to Bryan's Interests
which have never had any existence
and could never happen except In the
disordered Imaginations of their dis
eased or dishonest brains.
It Is perhaps known to most newspa
per readers In this city that the Asto
rian controls the only telegraphic press
report which comes to Astoria, and
every word of the columns of pretend
ed telegraphic news printed In other pa
pers Is manufactured bodily In the offi
ces of these publications, or clipped and
garbled from old newspapers arriving
here by very slow mail. But It would
be a great shame and Injustice, after
all the thorough and painstaking labor
performed for McKlnley and the cause
of sound money by the Republican or
ganizations of Clatsop county, if one
solitary uninformed or timid voter
should be distressed or influenced by
the roorbachs which will profusely ap

tion. The following certificate from the
managers of the only telegraph com

ought to put a quietus upon dishonest
campaign methods of this order. It has
been procured and is published in the
Interest of truth and the protection of
Clatsop county voters against the
frauds and Impositions already at

attempted for the purpose of misleading
them in their patriotic duty on the

The returns from the recent town elec
tions in Connecticut show that Mr.
Bryan's visit to that state was not
profitable to the cause he represents.
There has been a decided republican
gain, a number of places which have
been Democratic for many years having
now elected Republican tickets. It Is
predicted that Connecticut will give
McKinley a plurality of at least 23,000
and the ehanire in popular sentiment
thus promised is wholly due to the cur
rency issue. The people there want
honest money. The farmers and wage
earners of Connecticut desire to re
ceive for their products and their labor
as good a dollar a there is In the world
and they are too honest to want to
pay their obligations in a cheaper dol
lar. The example of these people Is,
therefore, valuable and it is this which
gives such Important significance to the
result. The state has six electoral votes,
but this does not measure the Influence
which the sentiment of its people
should exert upon the country. They are
Intelligent and practical people and
their decisive stand for sound money
will have an effect elsewhere. It is
certainly suggestive of the trend of
popular sentiment which we confident
ly believe Is growing more rapidly as
the election approaches towards the
Republican ticket.
