Mr. Brenham VanDusen and Alsea Fox returned late Monday evening from their hunting trip to the Upper Nehalem. Both gentlemen reported good sport, and said that the farmers all appeared to be In good spirits. Mr. VanDusen was loud In his praise of the Improved condition of the Walluskl road, and stated that It Is in much bet ter condition than ever before. Mr. Chauncey McDonald, the hard ware mart of Portland, Is In the city and reports that business throughout Oregon and Washington In the hard ware liae Is very materially picking up. He attributes the change in conditions to the fact that merchants have been asesured of McKinley's election. A bet ter business has been done wit!;jn ihe 1 past few days than -within the three months 1u eiapsed. Confidence is un doubtedly being restored. The Maginel-Mullln Concert Company will appear at Flshar's Opera House Tuesday evening next. The artists of this wmpny have world-wide reputa tions and Astorians are ensured a rich tfett. Nearly all of the choice seats of the house have been sold by subscrip tion, and further sale of seats will be duly announced. Mr. Brackett, the agent of the company, who will e In the city today, will keep the subscrip tion list open until evening. Mayor Taylor returned yesterday from his trip to Oakland, Douglass county, where he delivered an address before a large audience of enthusiastic people. The Judge says that the people in that part of the country are not all Republicans, but that they are all solid for MeKlnley. Douglass county will give a handsome majority for the Republic can ticket. All through the Willamette Valley the sentiment for MeKlnley Is very strong. Mining matters In Doug lass county are In good shape. The operators In the quicksilver and gold mines make good returns for their labor. The sociable held at the home of Rev. Mr. Walter last evening, was a most enjoyable affair. All available space was filled with a company bent on hav ing a good time. The entertainment given by Mrs. Crosby and others prov ed a surprise as well as a treat. Mrs. H. T. Crosby sang Loch Lamon, a Scotch sentimental song; Miss Lou De To recited In her usual excellent style "Things of the Night;" H. M. Brans ford appeared In a new role, and brought down the house. Miss Susie Roberts recited "The Frenchman and Flee Powder." Mr. W. W. Bracket, ad vance agent of the Maglnal-Mullin Co., recited several dialect selections, being called out repeatedly. In District No. 12. at a stake marked "I ;4i rods east of the Irt-mlle post, from Jewell to Vesper; thence northeast to an alder tree marked "R." 50 SO north from the township corners of sections 5 and 6 west; also to commence at a vine maple marked "R." it rods south fnun the northeast corner of section 13. In township (this being a termi nus of the road In Columbia count): thence running northwest W rods to connect with said road. And also at this time Is read the remonstrance of Chas. Oschaner and fourteen other's against the location of said road. And it appearing to the court that severul of the petitioners for said road have withdrawn, and the remonstrance con tains a greater number of names than the petition. It Is ordered that said pe tition be not granted. In the matter of establishing a county road as petitioned for by D. Tweedle et al. Now at this time Is presented the report of the viewers In the above road, and the same having been read and It appearing therefrom that said viewers have deviated from the route petitioned for. and the Court Is In doubt to the legality of said report. It Is orderid that the report be referred to J. A. Eakin to report as to the legality of said road as channel) by said view ers, and as to whether tii vfowrs are entitled to pay. Petition from H. F. Fisher and Peter Olson read, recommending that Airs Mary Nordlund be granted relief from the county, she being In destitute cir cumstances, and without means or property. Ordered that same be granted. Now comes G. W. Fisher, keeper Wal luskl bridge, and states that said bridge requires a chain, to be used when draw Is opened, to prevent persons from driving through. Ordered that the chain used for old Lewis and Clarke ferry be furnished him for the purposes , named. In the matter of liquor license for 1. F. L. Logan. Now at this time is presented a petition from 51 legal voters of Seaside precinct, to grant a license to Alex. Gilbert to sell liquors In less quantities than on gallon In said pre cinct for a period of three monthsj and also I presented a petition fmta said voters asking that ald license be granted to H. F. L. he having purchased the nalmxt from Alex. Gil bert. And It appearing to the court that the ptUloher has given notice by publication In the Weekly Herald, and hi paid the treasurer the sum of $1 for said license, and has filed a good and sufficient bond, and that no remonstrance against granting said li cense has been filed. It Is ordered that the Clerk Issue a license to said H. F. L. Logan to sell liquor at Seaside precinct, in less quantities than one gallon, for a period of three months. In the matter of bridge across Sklp- anon creek. P. C. Warren reports that the driving of piling and building of trestle, and material used, are accord ing to contract, and that he would pre fer the Court to Inspect the same, as It might be more satisfactory to all concerned. Ordered referred to Com missioners Peterson and Lewis to ex amine same tomorrow forenoon. Now comes O. A. Cole and states that he has completed bridge No. 16, on the Elsie road, and asks that same be ac cepted and warrant Issued to him for H40, according to contract. And it ap pearing that sa'd bridge Is not fully built according to the specifications. and that 110 should be deducted there from, It Is ordered that a warrant be Issued in favor of O. A. Cole for 1130, In payrrent of said bridge. In matter of bridge across McEwan's slough. Now comes W. J. Ingalls and states that he has completed the above bridge In accordance with his contract, and asks that warrant for $238 be Issued to him in payment thereof. And It ap pearing that J. H. D.
