Bryan sek the crowds and the
crowds seek McKlnley.
The difference between the labor
leaders, Powderly and Sovereisn. is
that Powderly has got pood sense and
Sovereign hasn't.
The hoodlums w ho went out to Olney
for the purpose of breaking up the Re
publican meeting at that point ought
to be arrested and made to smart for
their exhibition of vulgarity and row
dyism. It will give a fair idea of the Im
mensity of the Maine rebuke to Bryan
Ism to recall that when Blaine, the idol
of his party In that state, if not in the
entire country, ran for president his
plurality in Maine was only a little
over 1S.000. This year all party lines
have been obliterated, and an ordinary
" Republican, running for the inconse
quential office of governor, is elected
by a plurality of about 50.000.
Adolph Sutro, the erratic mayor of
San Francisco, has been claimed for
months past by the bombastic organ of
tree silver in that town as a "staunch
Bryan man." So used had the country
become to the mayor's little peculiari-
tiee that no one took the trouble to
investigate his standing, and the claim
has been generally accepted as true.
On last Friday, however, the Bulletin
published an interview with Mr. Sutro
in which that gentleman denies that
be supports the Brju platform, and
among other sensible things, says:
"I am a bimetalllst I believe that
much of the prosperity of the world
would come from the restoration of bi
metallism. The English voters
are blmetailista. and if they had a
chance to express their sincere opinion
the country would be bimetallic.
England must be brought in, and the
bimetalllsts ot this country must do it.
The money question is not merely na
tional. It concerns the whole world.
Money is in the hands of one nation j
today, in the hands of another tomor- j
row. It is absurd to think that a na-1
tion can stand alone in Its financial
policy. Money has to circulate between
the different countries of the world,
and without International agreement
one country profits at the expense of
another, and there Is a general disturb
ance of values. It makes no
difference to the world if the ratio is
16 to 1 or 30 to 1. It is the silvermine
ow ners and holders of silver stock who
are Interested in the value of silver.
But I am a thorou?h-going !.!m -talllst.
The ratio of 16 1 '..met.:. is only a
few silver miners; bimetallism con
cerns the whole world. The prosperity
of the world depends upon it. Money
cannot be a question of the Interests
of a clique of men. It is a question
affected by the commercial relations of
all commercial countries, and must be
settled by international agreement. It
has been proved that bimetallism is the
only financial policy under which the
world can prosper, tht-rfore the Inter
national agreement should be for bi
metallism. It Is necessary and possible
to draw the countries which are at
present under the single standard into
the agreement."
Thus, one by one. the politicians of
the whole cour.tr' are heeding the sen
timent of their respective sections and
cruwlimr in out of the wet. Any other
candidate but a blind and infatuated
lean like Mr. Uryan wjuM have Ions

POPOOKAT FAILITiE IN ARKAN
SAS. Chicago Times-Herald.
The election in Arkansas, whkh was
heralded by Senator Jones as a great
popoerat victory, turns out to be a
most gratifying augury of a national
triumph for sound money. The official
figures carry dismay into the ranks of
the repudiationlsts. which is now ren
dered doubly poignant by Senator
Juries' ill-advised proclamation of tri
ump. The effort to Inspire with courage the
disheartening ranks of popoeracy by
making a tour de force In Mr. Jones'
state has been a dismal failure. In
stead of of being the largest Democrat
ic majority in Arkansas for years the
official returns show it to be the small
est. The gubernatorial returns for Ihe
last three elections were as follows:
18'J2. 1VJ1. Wi.
Democrat 50,115 74.809 71.01G
Republican 33,044
Populist 31,117
Prohibition 1,310
26,03
24,541
1,551
20.410
11.280
1,043
Total 156,186 126,986, 1 lO.KTS
Dem. plurality.... 56,471 48,824 45,235
It will be seen from this table that
although the popoerat vote has ab-
surbed one half the tVpullat vole of
Ii2, It lai'ka over S.tVO of lioltin e.jnal
to the vote of 1S"4. and tr IS.4T low
than the Dem.wratlo vote of ly.'J.
Queer, too, for the men who run the
election thought they had iuvvlili-,1 for
a much larger in.irirln.
If this rale of divreaao In the popo-ci-at
vole from the cumMiuM Populist
and Democrat vote Is to be kept up all
over the country, Mr. Jones might as
well pack up his hi'mlqimrioro in his
little irrip and return to the hav-ileMs
of Arkansas. It moans that no coinbi
nation that can be devl..l will defeat
McKlnley.
LOOK AT KANSAS.
If anyone doubts the results that
would follow the elevation of Bryan
and his poi ullstic crowd to power, look
at Kansas. Populism has run rot
I In that state for the last elsht year
land has about ruined It The blight
'of populism has not only paialyxcd
capital In the slate, and kept outside
capital from eomln In. but it has
i caused a most alarming exodus of p. p
; ulation. Commenting on the fact that
the state's sain In population last jear
. was less than :.ooo. the Kmporia (Ka:i I
j Gazette says: "There are about 1-5.-
oot families In the state, an I there
j were about li.iV babies born in Kan
; sas. yet so many people have left the
state that the natural increase Is cut
; down to less than :.W net. This has
been going on for eight years." If
Kansas has gained In population dur
ing the last five years In the same ratio
as the rest of the country it would
have added 5tViV0 to Its population.
The showing as to capital Is worse.
"Every moneyed man In the state,"
says the Oaaette. "who can get out
without great loss has gone. Every
month in the community sees some
one who has a little money pick up and
leave the state. This has been going
on for eight years. Money Is being
drained out all the time. In towns
where ten years ago there were three
or four, or half a doi-n money-l. nding
concerns stimulating Industry by fur
nishing capital, there Is none now, or
one or two are looking after the inter
est and principal already out s'.arul
ing. No one brings any money into
Kansas any more."
This is how Kansas has been r -gen
crated. The state has been overrun
w ith "statesmen" and "statesw. men'
of every degree of crankiness, and the
result Is that the state has been
brought to the verge of ruin and bank
ruptcy.

MARVELOUS RESULTS.
From a letter written by Rev. J Gun

hesitation in recommending Dr. King's
New Discovery, as the results were al
most marvelous in the case of my wife.
While I was pastor of the Baptist
church at Rives Junction she was
brought down with Pneumonia succeed
ing La Grippe. Terrthle paroxysms or
